San Antonio Heights bear getting comfortable in backyards

| | Comments (1) |
The San Antonio Heights bear does not seem to be going anywhere soon.

The bear has been found relaxing in the shady backyards of residents and roaming around in search of a tasty snack, often out of the garbage.

It has also been seen taking a soak in residents' pools during the scorching hot summer days.

It appears the bear has found the foothill community to be a comfortable place to stay.

My son Joey Miller & his two friends were on 24th St., on Wed, July 28 approx 6:00 pm just west of Euclid and witnessed the entire thing.

They were on 24th Street, in Upland, drinking a soda when they saw a Sheriff car which peaked their interest, as they started walking towards the Sheriff's vehicle, a medium sized brown bear darted across the street in front of them. The Sheriff, then followed the bear and cornered it, shooting it 3 times, which still didn't kill the bear. The boys said they could hear it crying in pain. The boys said they did not feel threatened by the bear, but started running away when they saw the riffle come out of the vehicle the sheriff was is.

I wonder why on earth this needed to happen! We live at the base of Mt. Baldy - should the police & sheriffs not be equipped with tranquilizers? I remember, a few months back, there was a bear in the Wal-Mart parking lot on Foothill & Benson, they were able to tranquilize the bear. If this is the policy of the San Bernardino Sheriffs, I feel that they should have the proper equipment & policies to handle situations like this in a much more humane way.

You have my full permission to use any of these photos as you see fit.

Warmest regards,

Patricia Miller
