Foothill Family Shelter will have a baseball night July 10 at the Quakes Stadium, 8408 Rochester Avenue Rancho Cucamonga.

Tickets are $8 per person. Parking is $4.

People who cannot attend can still sponsor a child at the shelter.

The Upland Chamber of Commerce is having it's Annual Installation Dinner and Leadership Academy Graduation Wednesday at La Villa Bella, 792 W. Arrow Hwy.

Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. Dinner is at 6:45 p.m., followed by the program at 7:30 p.m.

Cost is $35 per person.

The Chamber will be thanking their outgoing 2009-10 Chairman of the Board, Eric Hanson, and installing Greg Armstrong as their 2010-11 Chairman.

They will also be installing other officers and directors of the board.

The city of Upland will present it's 24th Annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular Celebration on Sunday at Upland High School, 565 W. 11th St.

This year's celebration will feature more than 1,500 pyrotechnic shells.

Tickets are $7 per person. Children under 2 years old can attend free of charge.

The ticket booth and admission gates at the high school's stadium will open at 5:30 p.m.

The Ravelers will perform at 6 p.m.

The fireworks display is scheduled for 9 p.m.

Joseph Machado in Missouri today

June 24 was officially declared Joseph Machado Day in Oklahoma.

Joseph, 13, is riding his bicycle to Washington D.C. to raise money for children's charities.

Upon arriving in Oklahoma City, Joseph met with Governor Brad Henry, who named that day in honor of Joseph.

Joseph is scheduled to ride 75 miles to Springfield, Missouri today.

Three Upland High School students were honored for their volunteer work during Rep. David Dreier's 2010 Youth Volunteer Award Program on June 1.


More than 40 high school students from throughout the San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire participated in this year's program.


To participate in the YVA Program, students were required to submit an application, write an essay on volunteerism, and provide a letter of recommendation. They were then interviewed by a board of community leaders about their volunteer activities.


The following are the Upland students who were recognized:


3rd Runner Up category


Katharine Baker assists nurses in the Labor and Delivery Unit at San Antonio community Hospital in Upland. She has participated in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life for the last five years. Baker earned her Girl Scout Gold Award by setting up collections outside of Upland grocery stores for the Foothill Family Shelter. She collected more than 700 pounds of food and 3,000 diapers. Her goal was to raise awareness for homelessness and hunger in her community. Baker also serves as a teacher's assistant at Chino Valley's Children's Ministry.

 

Rachel Delmanis a member of the Girl Scouts of America and earned her Gold Award project by assisting mothers through the Pacific Lifeline program. While the mothers arrive for their group meetings, Delman tutors, plays games and makes crafts with their children. Through her experience at Pacific Lifeline, in Upland, her awareness of domestic violence has led her on her future career path. Delman's hope is to run her own home for battered women and children.


Honorable Mention category


Kevin Dumbler is an instructor at the United States Adaptive Recreation Center, where he helps physically and mentally disabled participants learn water sports during the summer and snow sports during the winter. Some of the participants range from amputee mothers to kids with Autism or Down Syndrome, to teenagers who are blind and deaf. Dumbler is also a Boy Scout and has earned his Eagle Award.


The Ontario-Upland-Rancho Cucamonga branch of the American Association of University Women is hosting it's Installation of Officers and Awards Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Saturday June 12 at Antonio's Italian Restaurant, 7945 Vineyard Ave., Rancho Cucamonga.


Kathy Kinley will become President, Kay Mellon and Linda Strotz will become co-vice presidents of membership and Kay Alexander will be named as treasurer.


The installation ceremony will be conducted by Barbara Hughbanks.


A named-gift honoree and reciepients of the Chaffey College Scholarships will be announced.


Cost is $22.


Membership is open to anyone with a two or four-year degree or equivalent.


The Ontario-Upland-Rancho branch was founded 55 years ago.

Steven's Hope For Children in Upland is encouraging families to join them for their annual "Night at the Ballpark" at 7 p.m. June 19 at the Epicenter, 8408 Rochester Ave., Rancho Cucamonga.


The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes will be taking on the Inland Empire 66ers.


There is a special father/child pre-game catch on the field before the game. A fireworks display will follow the game.


Tickets are $0 and are limited. Tickets can be ordered by calling 909-373-0678.


Steven's Hope is an Upland-based non-profit that provides temporary housing for families with sick children near the hospital where they are treated.


Every year, several of the non-profit's resident and non-resident families join in to reconnect with others and to celebrate the health and recovery of their child.


Sponsorships are available for $10 a child, $40 for an entire family and $5 for a meal. 

A Newport Beach resident will be taking a team of moms with her to the top of Mt. Baldy on June 19.


Mindy Cameron and her team will be hiking for Cure Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a Newport Beach-based non-profit that helps raise money for medical research.


Cameron's 8 year-old son, Christopher, was diagnosed with Duchenne when he was a baby. Duchenne causes the muscles to swell and restricts joints.


The Mt. Baldy Chamber of Commerce has donated 500 lift tickets for the team to sell in order to raise money.


The climbers will assemble between 8 and 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot. The hike should be completed around 2:30 p.m.

The cats and kittens at the Upland Animal Facility will be making their historic
attempt to fly June 12 to 13. 

The hundreds of felines at the facility are planning on flying out the door and into new lifelong, loving homes. 

The public is encouraged to help these wonderful, courageous felines in their quest
to make world history and fly like cats have never flown before. 

During this attempt to defy gravity, the adoption fee for cats and kittens will be $25. 

With the adoption, the felines will be spayed or neutered, micro-chipped and vaccinated. 

The Upland Animal Shelter will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

The event is made possible due to the sponsorship of the Landecena Family Foundation.

The Upland Relay For Life event will be from 9 a.m. June 12 through 9 a.m. June 13 at Magnolia Park, 651 W. 15th St., Upland. 

Relay For Life is a 24-hour community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer. 

Teams of people will camp out at the park and take turns walking around a track. Each team will have a representative on the track at all times during the event. 

The event brings together millions of people to raise money to help prevent cancer, save lives and diminish suffering from the disease. 

While participants raise money they also help raise awareness of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and patient support.

The Oldskool 66 Cruzers are hosting the Hope For Life Car Show benefiting City of Hope from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13 in Memorial Park, 1100 E. Foothill Blvd., Upland. 

There will be a live band, food, trophy's, drawings and prizes. 

The event is open to all cars and bikes. Cost to enter the show is $10. All donations go to cancer research.

Assembly candidate Acquanetta Warren is asking voters to sign petitions in support of Arizona's businesses at the Upland Farmer's Market in downtown Upland tonight. 

The petitions will be available at her office, 238 N. 2nd Ave. in downtown. 

All petitions can be returned to Warren's downtown headquarters when completed. She will deliver them directly to Sacramento. 

Warren is a Fontana City Councilwoman running as a Republican for the 63rd Assembly District. 

Warren, who has been featured on the John & Ken show recently, had been attacked at a city council meeting by radical activists for defending Arizona's right to enforce the federal law at the state level, noting that California already has a similar law on the books, although it's rarely enforced.
The Upland Highland Regiment Boosters organization is hosting a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Upland High School cafeteria. 

Food will continue to be served until all the food has left the grill. 

Cost is $5.

Bands moms and dads will be serving pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice. 

Allstate Exclusive Agent Matthew Lyons received the Agency Hands in the Community award for his commitment to helping others in this area. 

The award includes a $1,000 grant from the Allstate Foundation for the Inland Valley Council of Churches where Lyons volunteers. 

"The very fabric of Allstate consists of people who care about their local community," said Hank Barge, Allstate field vice president in California in a news release.

"The Agency Hands in the Community program is a powerful way for Allstate agents to get involved with their local nonprofits and partner with them in making their communities stronger and safer places."

Through the Agency Hands in the Community grant program, Allstate agents and personal financial representatives are recognized for outstanding commitment to community service with a $1,000 donation to the charitable organization where they volunteer. To qualify for the grant, agents and personal financial representatives must show evidence of volunteer work
that has had a positive impact on the local community.

Allstate Insurance Company's California Region supports a network of agencies that serve households and businesses throughout the state. These businesses provide a large variety of insurance and financial products. 

Agents, personal financial representatives and employees of the California region have a long, proud history of supporting the communities where they live and do business through volunteerism and charitable contributions.

The Allstate Foundation will give over $600,000 throughout California in 2010 in addition to another $100,000 through the Agency Hands in the Community grant program.

Ross Moen, a maintenance worker for the Upland Unified School District, was announced the 2010 Member of the Year by the California School Employees' Association Upland Chapter 163. 

The announcement was during the chapter's annual fiesta on May 18 at Don Jose Restaurant. 
Moen has worked in the district for five years. 

The chapter also announced recipients of their annual scholarships, totaling $3,000.

Robin Hvidston and some of her family members took a trip to Sedona, Arizona last week to participate in a "buycott."

Hvidston, a member of Claremont-based anti-illegal immigration group We The People California's Crusader, took her mother, daughter and sister with her.
 
Participation in the "buycott" is in opposition to calls for an Arizona Boycott over their new immigration law.

Hvidston, her mother Eileen Olson and daughter, Laura Sanches are all from Upland. 

Sanches designed shirts for the group to wear during their trip.

The group visited with locals and spent their money in local shops. 

Hvidston said all of the residents they met were in support of the law.
