Two Upland residents recently received a prize for their screenplay, "Under the Apple Tree."
Matthew Hill and Landon Johnson placed third last month in the 2011 Kairos Prize contest for spiritually-uplifting screenplays.
They were awarded $10,000 funded by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation as well as sponsorship through various script promotion services such as InkTip.com.
The host of the competition, Movieguide.org will send their script to a number of producers and agents interested in producing faith-based material.
This could lead to the script being made into a finished film, Hill said.
Robb Quincey was placed on paid leave of absence on Jan. 4 and has since been collecting his compensation and benefits while away from the job.
Former Mayor John "JP" Pomierski, now under federal indictment, approved all the changes to Quincey's contract that now costs the city more than $460,000 annually. The City Council approved some of them, but it is not clear whether the council approved others.
UPLAND - The city will be taking the lead on this year's Lemon Festival in downtown, without the help of its founder.
After the bankruptcy of Main Street Upland Inc., the city has stepped in to take control of the non-profit's former events, including the festival.
The city decided not to retain Mark Hill's services, who founded the festival 13 years ago. Hill owned Davis Goldmark Jewelers in downtown before retiring in 2010.
"He's been there a long time because the store's been there. He's been involved each year and we really appreciate all the services and dedication that he has done for the city, but sometimes when there's a new situation you need to go ahead and let them have full reign to go forward," said Mayor Ray Musser.
