Parent Academy to teach about raising socially responsible children

The Upland Unified School District and the Upland Council of PTAs are offering a free parent academy from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Upland High School Auditorium, 565 W. 11th Street.

Michelle Borba will be speaking about "Parenting For Character: Raising Socially Responsible Kids Who Do The Right Thing."

The session will teach parents proven strategies that boost empathy, conscience as well as self-control and discipline techniques.

Borba will also teach essential character-building skills that will help children say no, solve problems, think before acting and consider the needs of others.

The session is based on Borba's book, "Building Moral Intelligence," which was chosen by Amazon as a "Top Ten Parenting Book of the year."

Child care will not be provided.

Santa's coming to town

Santa will be visiting Upland for breakfast from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Dec. 5 at the Gibson Senior Center, 250 N. Third Ave.

The city's Recreation and Community Services Division and the Upland Kiwanis have teamed up to bring Santa down from the North Pole for their annual Breakfast with Santa. Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, juices, milk and coffee.

Santa will be available to hear what children are putting on their wish lists and will have a special treat for each child.

Attendees are required to register in advance with the Recreation and Community Services Office as space is limited.

Main Street Upland hosting Upland Chamber of Commerce meeting Dec. 4

3rd Annual Christmas Parade and craft faire Dec. 5 in downtown

The 3rd Annual Children's Christmas Parade and Craft Faire is from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 5 in downtown Upland.

There will be 100 arts and crafts vendors showing a variety of special ideas and gifts for the holidays. Guests can enjoy free ice skating and snow play areas, live holiday entertainment and more than 20 food vendors.

The parade will begin at 5 p.m. and Santa Claus will be available for photos afterward at the corner of A Street and 2nd Avenue.

Many downtown businesses will be open.

A capella group performing at 17th Annual Christmas Nativity Art & Music Festival Dec. 3

What do college student Chris Jueschke, retiree Russell Ward, Bio-Chemist Bob Allen, Target employee Todd Jueschke, Small Business owner, Craig Holmes and Art student Mark Hendrickson have in common?

They'll be performing at the 17th Annual Christmas Nativity Art & Music Festival at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 785 N. San Antonio Ave.

The "Six Basses" are an all male a capella group. They will also be one of more than 25 performing groups, including local Junior High and High School Choirs as well as multiple and various denominational choirs who will share a variety of Christmas melodies at the three-day festival.

The festival will run from Dec. 3 to Dec. 5. Perfomance times are 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to a variety of seasonal music, the Art & Music Festival features over 1,000 Nativities and Children's activities, which all community members are invited to enjoy. The event is hosted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Pets looking for homes in time for the holidays

The Landecena Family Foundation will be sponsoring a "Home For The Holidays Adoption Weekend" at the Upland Animal Shelter from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

All cat and kitten adoptions will be $25 and all dogs and puppies can go home for a $35 adoption fee.

Upland residents will need to license any dogs that are adopted for $15.

Adoptions will include spay and neuter, an AVID microchip, current vaccinations and a free vet health check.

The Upland Animal Shelter staff is hoping the help from the Landecena Family Foundation will find many dogs and cats new lifelong and loving homes in time for the holidays.

The George M. Gibson Senior Center is looking for gift donations for 100 of their seniors.

The center will be holding their annual Holiday Breakfast at 9 a.m. Dec. 23 at the center and would like to pass out gifts.

Tarbell Realtors in Upland helping to stock shelves at Foothill Family Shelter

Agents from the Tarbell Realtors Upland office collected non-perishable foods in their neigbhorhoods and Fresh & Easy Neighbhorhood Market, 89 E. Foothill Blvd. from Nobemver 14-15.

People wishing to make further donations of non-perishable food items may drop them off between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Tarbell Office, 1570 W. Foothill Blvd. in Upland.

The agents collected food to help stock the shelves at Foothill Family Shelter in Upland. The collection was enhanced by five students from the Upland High School Jazz Band.

The collection gathered enough food to fill seven trucks. The agents recieved some extra help from Stater Bros, Vons, Albertson's, Fresh & Easy and Food For Less for contributions including grocery bags for the collection.

Adults night out for Pop Warner football

Upland Chargers heading to regionals

The Upland Chargers Pop Warner Pee Wee football team have something to celebrate this week.

The team won the Mt. Baldy Division 1 Championship November 8 against the Fontana Elks.

The Chargers beat the Elks 20 to 16.

Now they will be headed to the Wescon Regional Championships Saturday where they'll play the Canyon Hills Cowboys.

The game starts at noon and will be at Chaffey College, 5885 Haven Avenue.

Three Upland Pop Warner students competing for scholarship

Three students involved in the Upland Pop Warner Football and Competitive Cheer "Little Scholars" program, will be competing for the "Pop Warner Lil Scholar" scholarship.

Out of six contenders, eighth-graders, Matthew Castro, Mitchel Davis and Matthew Zahn were chosen to compete.

Each student wrote an essay on "making the right choices" along with examples of their experience.

Each student maintained a 4.0 grade point average, served the community through various activities and demonstrated a list of leadership roles outside and inside school.

The Little Scholars program is active in 42 states and six countries. Pop warner requires their players to perform well in school in order to participate. The winning scholar will receive an academic scholarship.

Upland Police looking for residents without seat belts

The Upland Police Department is warning residents to click or get a ticket during this holiday season.

Officers will be out looking for anyone not properly restrained as part of the "2009 Holiday Click it or Ticket" mobilization today through Nov. 30.

Given the years of public awareness campaigns and hundreds of "click it or ticket" highway signs, no warnings will be given out.

California has a seat belt usage rate of 95.4 percent, which still means more than 1.5 million people in the state are not buckling up, according to a news release from the Upland Police Department.

Properly restrained drivers, passengers and children have a 50 percent better chance of surviving a crash than an unbelted occupants.

More than 175 local law enforcement agencies statewide and the California Highway Patrol will be participating in this year's "click it or ticket" mobilization.

Funding for the effort was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Upland Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving

Residents looking to burn a few calories prior to a huge Thanksgiving feast will have the opportunity to through the Upland Turkey Trot at 8 a.m. on Nov. 26, Thanksgiving.

Check in for the race is 6:30 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m.

Participants will run or walk five miles from San Antonio Park on Mountain Ave. and 24th Street and back again.

The run/walk is sponsored by the city of Upland Recreation & Community Services and the Upland High School Boys and Girls Baseline Champs Cross Country Team.

Funds will help support the cross country team.

Those who haven't signed up yet will have to pay late registration. It's $30 for a 5K trot and $15 for a kids 1K Trot.
