Animal shelter holding yard sale

The Upland Animal Shelter and Friends of Upland Animal Shelter are sponsoring the second annual Yard Sale of the Century from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 18 next to the shelter at 1275 San Bernardino Road.

All proceeds will be used to care for the animals at the shelters and help them find new, lifelong homes.

Last year's sale raised nearly $7,000, which helped to save the lives of many dogs and cats.

The shelter is now accepting donations for the yard sale.

Anyone who has always wanted to help homeless pets, but are financially unable can donate items they no longer use.

Anyone looking for special treasures can stop by the sale on Feb. 18.

Webelos explore for geology badge

A group of Upland Webelos recently explored the desert.

Pack 614, Den 1 traveled to Barstow Saturday to hunt for fossils and rock samples as part of earning their geology badges.

The group collected rock and fossil samples at the Rainbow Basin and the Pisgah Crater to present during their badge ceremony this month.

The group of 9 9-to-10- year-old Upland boys are currently working their way through Webelos to eventually join the Boy Scouts. From there they will move up to Eagle Scouts.

The scouts spent two evenings last month at Cal Poly Pomona working with geologist and former scout, Jason Smith and his wife Melissa who is also a geologist.

They learned about plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, minerals, rocks and fossils.

The Smiths headed the desert exploration.

"The kids love it," Jason Smith said. "They're really into it. It's lots of hands on."

Ebook workshop at Library

The Upland Public Library is holding their third workshop on downloading library books to e-readers from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 13.

Library users can learn how to sign up and log on to the library's digital library to check-out books for Nook, Kindle and iPad.

The workshop will be in the multipurpose room at 450 N. Euclid Ave.

Webelos and their dads bake and decorate cakes

Cub Pack 614, Webelo Den 1 of Upland recently had a father/son cake baking contest, with no moms allowed.

The Webelos participated in the contest on Jan. 24 at Pepper Tree Elementary School in Upland as part of a national Cub Scout event.

Webelos and their fathers had to bake the cakes and decorate them according to a chosen theme, without any help from the mothers.

Some of the themes included America the beautiful; movies; outer space; pirates; scouting and sports.

Making the task a little more difficult, the cakes had to be completely edible.

The Lyons Club conducted the judging and sponsored the event.

YMCA holding Healthy Start Open House Saturday

The Scheu Family YMCA of Upland is holding their first Healthy Start Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at their new facility, 1150 E. Foothill Blvd.

There will be opportunity drawings, give-a-ways, food, sports and dance clinics, personal training sessions and more.

The event is free to the public.

The YMCA is also looking for volunteers to help with staff tours, program information and give-a-ways.

Volunteers are to wear their board pin for identification.

Upland High theater performing romantic comedy this week

The Upland High School Theater Department will be performing "Almost, Maine," a romantic comedy, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the auditorium, 565 W. 11^th St.

Tickets are $8.

Performances are 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday as well as 2 p.m. Saturday.

SACH hosting lecture on women's heart health and cooking demo

San Antonio Community Hospital will host a lecture and healthy heart cooking demonstration for women's heart health from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Landecena Community Center, 1325 San Bernardino Road in Upland.

Cardiologist Fatima Hakkak will teach participants how heart disease differs for women and will show them how to recognize the signs of a heart attack as well as how knowing "your numbers" can decrease risk.

San Antonio Community Hospital's executive chefs will demonstrate how to prepare quick and easy heart-smart foods at home.

Light appetizers will be served.

Councilman to speak to Upland Woman's Club next week

The Upland Highland Regiment Boosters will host a "Food Truck Frenzy" from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 18 at Cable Airport, 1749 W. 13^th St. in Upland.

Attendees will enjoy a day of food, entertainment, vendors, a fun zone and music.

Entry is $5. Kids under 5 years old can enter for free.

Dale Bros. Brewery of Upland will have a beer garden.

Blood drive Sunday at First United Methodist Church

LifeStream will hold a community blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church, 262 N. Euclid Ave. in Upland.

Upland Fire Division Chief retires

Upland Fire Division Chief Suzanne Cable was recognized by the City Council on Monday for her service to the city.

Cable is retiring after 32 years of fire service, of which the last 10 years were spent with the Upland Fire Department.

"Thank you to everybody," Cable said. "It's been an honor to serve the city of Upland and a big thank you to my husband for putting up with me and supporting me with this decision."

Prior to working for Upland, Cable was a wild land fire fighter for the California Department of Forestry.

Councilman Ken Willis thanks Cable for her service to the city, in particular her leadership during the Grand Prix fire in 2003.

"It swept across I think over 15 houses in San Antonio Heights were lost during that horrible occasion, but I remember people talking about your leadership during that fire and things that you did to protect our citizens. Thank you," Willis said.
