I've already begun doing this, so expect to see less on Upland Now. But, don't stop sending me your news items or events! I will still be posting them online and getting them in Upland Now in the newspaper.

The Upland Professional Firefighters and Upland City Fire Department delivered new backpacks and school supplies to local elementary schools during the first week of classes.

"Most of our firefighters have families of their own so were excited to participate in a project like this where we're helping local kids in need. With each of our members participating in this project, our department was able to collect dozens of new backpacks along with several boxes of school supplies for children here in Upland," said Ryan Webb, president of the Upland Professional Firefighters, in a city news release. "Every day as we respond to emergency calls within the city, our firefighters encounter families in

need so we felt this was an excellent opportunity to help those families during these hard

economic times."

Upland firefighters spent the last few weeks collecting donated backpacks and school supplies from the community to give to Upland elementary school students.

The Upland Professional Firefighters' Local #3477 is the labor association representing the 36 members of the Upland Fire Department.

A blood drive will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mountain View Chevrolet in Upland in support of Justin Cacucciolo, who has been diagnosed with Common Variable Immune Deficiency.

The disease, CVID, prevents Justin's immune system from creating immune cells and keeping them in his body. He has weekly infusions of immune Globulin to regulate his immune system.

The blood produces plasma and Justin needs 100 people a week to donate for one week of treatment.

Since Justin started receiving transfusions in November 2010, his immune levels are at a healthy range for the first time ever, according to a flyer for the drive.

The donations will be administered by the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.

People can donate blood even if they have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Medications associated with theses illnesses are suitable. Tattoos and piercings are acceptable after one year.

Identification is required.

Donors must be at least 16 years old as well as meet height and weight requirements.

For more information and to make an appointment call Kristy Cacucciolo at 951-316-6884.

Donors can also make an appointment online at www.redcrossblood.org and use sponsor code: MVCHEVROLET.

The dealership is at 1079 W. Foothill Blvd.
