Patt Blair of Mt. Baldy was recently named as a finalist in the International Quilt Association's annual judged show, "Quilts: A World of Beauty."

Blair's work, "My Kind of Dragon," was a finalists in the Art-Painted Surface category.

Winners of the competition will be announced today during the Winners Circle Celebration in Houston, Texas just prior to the International Quilt Festival, the largest quilt-making show, sale and quilt-making academy in the world, according to an Association news release.

The contest will award $96,250 in cash, non-purchase prizes to winners in 21 categories.



Watershed Clean Up Day Sept. 10

The San Antonio Canyon Watershed will hold its 7th annual Clean Up Day from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 10 along Shinn Road in Mt. Baldy.


Volunteers will spend time picking up debris and litter to keep the water supply clean.

Refreshments and snacks will be provided.


The cities of Upland and Pomona as well as the San Antonio Water Company will be participating.

The clean up will be across the street from Fire Station 25 at 3000 N. Mountain Rd.




The Mt. Baldy Community Association will have a ground breaking ceremony for the Mt. Baldy Museum-Dorothy Wisely History Center at noon on June 4.


The museum at 6778 Mt. Baldy Road is a project of the Mt. Baldy Community Association, a non-profit organization established to promote culture, history and public education in Mt. Baldy as well as to make the unique history of the small mountain town available to the region.


Association president, Marta Escanuelas and board members Dave and Maci Siriani, Daven Gray, Cathy Granger, Tanja Adam and Joey Martin will be in attendance for the ground breaking.


Board and sub-committee members Charlene Delgado, Missy Poore and Nancy Strickland have been organizing and cataloging items for display in the museum.


This is the organization's next step in the conversion of an unused Ranger's House at the U.S. Forest Service Visitor Center Compound in the center of Mt. Baldy Village.


When completed, the museum will house a variety of exhibits and displays conveying San Antonio Canyon's history form the mining days to the present.


Also to be included will be displays about the pioneers, the native Tongva Indian tribe, the development of hydroelectric power, Mt. Baldy as a getaway frequented by Hollywood movie stars in the 1920's and 1930's, the development of the ski area after World War II as well as the devastating fires and floods.


The museum will be named in part to honor the late Dorothy Wisely, who was the canyon's unofficial historian. Her family donated extensive archives to the community for preservations and exhibit to the public.

John Robinson, author of "Trails of the Angeles" and "The San Gabriel Mountains," will speaking at the Mt. Baldy Visitor Center at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Robinson will discuss a variety topics related to the history of the San Gabriel Mountains as well as native plants and wildlife.

He will be available for a book signing. 

Cost is $5.

The last Saturday of every month is devoted to the Mt. Baldy Visitor Center Speaker Series. The series is meant to teach the community about the Angeles National Forest.

The Mt. Baldy Visitor Center is in the middle of the Mt. Baldy Village on the west side of the street, just past the Mt. Baldy Lodge.

The Mt. Baldy Chamber of Commerce is offering the community a chance to get out of the heat this weekend.

They will be offering free scenic ride lift tickets on their Web site, http://www.mtbaldychamber.com/

Temperatures at the Top of the Notch Restaurant at the top of the chair lift are generally 15 degrees cooler than the Inland Valley. 

Mt. Baldy giving away gift cards

The Mt. Baldy Chamber of Commerce will be giving away $25 gift cards for a limited time.

"We are giving away free $25.00 Mt Baldy Gift Cards to encourage visitors to the mountain. We are paying people to experience Mt Baldy," said Keith Hunt, president of the Mt. Baldy Chamber of Commerce.

Mt Baldy is the closest ski resort to most of Los Angeles Country and the Inland Empire and all of San Diego and Orange Counties. It is located above north Upland and Claremont off the 210 Freeway.

Currently all Mt Baldy lifts are operating and most runs are open with a 2 to 4 foot base. Check daily ski report at www.mtbaldy.com

Physical cards to be picked up at the Mt Baldy Ski Resort ticket office by April 30th 2010 and can be used immediately.

The Redhook California Duathlon at Mt Baldy has been rescheduled to Saturday October 3.

The event was originally scheduled for September 12, but was canceled due to the fires, air quality and the closure of the Angeles National Forest.

The first annual Redhook California Duathlon, sponsored by Redhook Ale and Coates Cyclery, Kona Bikes and Giant Bikes combines a 10 mile biking and 3 mile running events in one race.

Bikers will be biking and running at elevations between 6,000 and 8,000 feet.
 

The event begins with a mountain bike leg down from the  Mt. Baldy Ski Lifts parking lot three quarters of a mile past San Antonio Falls up a 3 mile climb on service/fire road to the Top Of The Notch Restaurant. The race continues on the service roads past Desert View around 2 reservoirs to the transition area at The Notch.

 
The 3-mile foot race will take the challengers up Turkey Shoot then back across Roller Coaster and back down to the finish line in front of The Notch.

The Awards Party, including the trophy presentation and raffle prizes, will be conducted at the Notch.

Entry fee for the Redhook California Duathlon is $49 in advance or $59 on race day with registration starting at 6am.

Friends and families are encouraged to ride the Ski Lift to the Top of the Notch Restaurant to cheer on the competitors and participate in the post race activities.

Mt Baldy can be reached by taking the Mountain exit in Upland off the 210 Freeway and going north following signs to Mt Baldy Resorts. Alternatively take the Baseline exit in Claremont and go north on Padua. Turn right on Mt Baldy Road taking that all the way through the Village. Mt Baldy Road dead ends in the Ski Lift parking lot.

The Longboard Island Lager Mountain Bike X-C Loop Race starts at 8 a.m. Saturday September 19 in Mt. Baldy. Registration starts at 6 a.m.

The race is an off road high altitude challenge cross country mountain bike race. All levels of riders race a 2 and a half loop course at elevations between 7,500 to 8,200 feet around two reservoirs with challenging uphill climbs and fast downhill sections.

The finish line and awards party will be at Top of the Notch Restaurant.
