Western Christian Schools was recently approved for a $17 million grant to help upgrade its facilities on their Upland and Claremont campuses.

The bond will be issued by the Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Authority, through the approval of the Upland and Claremont city councils.

In order for Western Christian to receive the bond, a public hearing must be held through the city council.

Upland and Claremont are not responsible for the bond, nor will they be on the hook for any payments.

"We're in no way financially obligation to this bond," said Jeff Zwack, Upland's redevelopment director.

The bond money will be used in financing and refinancing the costs of acquisition, construction, improvement, renovation, remodeling, furnishing and equipping some of the educational facilities on its Upland and Claremont campuses.

Western Christian Schools has a K-8 campus in Claremont and a high school campus in Upland. The high school moved in 2009 into the former Upland Christian Schools campus at 100 W. 9th street.

Western Christian Schools in July 2009 was granted a $12 million bond to update the Upland campus through the authority. It received approval from Upland City Council.

The Western Christian High School football team will soon have a real home field advantage.

The school's new athletic complex is expected to be completed in time for the school's homecoming game on Friday.

A dedication of the complex, which includes the football field and bleachers, as well as a carnival will be part of Friday's celebration of the school's 90th anniversary.

"This is a big, big deal," said Nick Karavedas, Western Christian High's athletic director.

Since moving to the former Upland Christian Schools campus in 2009, the team has played home games at other public fields, such as Grigsby Field at Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, and has practiced at Sierra Vista Park in Upland.

The school's girls and boys soccer teams also will call the complex home when their seasons start.

"We're grateful to the city, but to be able to come out of class and go straight to your own field it just adds another dynamic to it and for our soccer kids, too," Karavedas said.

Athletes at Western Christian High School are hosting a community yard sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the high school's parking lot, 100 W. 9th Street.

The sports teams will be selling a large selection of tools, clothes, shoes and coats for all ages, furniture as well as a variety of other items.

All proceeds will benefit the Western Christian athletes and clubs.

People who wish to sell their own items can purchase two parking spots for $30.

Donations in good sellable condition will also be accepted.

Western Christian High School is having a "Cow Chip Plop" fundraiser from 12 to 3 p.m. April 17 on the school's athletic field, 100 W. 9th Street, in Upland.

There are 2,000 deeds, measuring one-square yard, available. There will be a $5 donation for each deed. Deeds can be purchased from any Athletic Booster member, High School or Middle School Lancer athlete, ASB or Drama student.

Available deeds can be purchased the day of the event until 11:45 a.m.

There will be prizes for 1st Plot, 2nd Plop and 3rd Plop.

At noon three cows will be released onto the football field. The first three plops are measured and recorded.

Rules and regulations:

  1. Cow Chip Plop field will be a 50 x 40 yard field located at Western Christian High School.

  2. Each square yard represents a "land deed parcel" (total of 2000), which corresponds to each numbered deed (0001 to 2000)

  3. Each "land deed parcel" (deed) requires a $5.00 donation payable at time of deed purchase.

  4. Students and adults can sell tickets. In addition to presales, deeds may be purchased, if available, the day of event at the Cow Chip table up until 11:45 a.m.

  5. All parcels are numbered at random prior to starting. A chart will display the parcels during the Cow Chip Plop Game.

  6. At 12 noon on April 17, 2010, three cows will be released onto the Lancers 50 x 40 yard football field.

  7. The first three "plops" are measured and recorded.

  8. Once each parcel has been located on the corresponding numbered chart, the winnings are paid as follows based on selling all 2000 land deed parcels (deeds):

  • The first "plop" wins $200.00 or 2% of the total purchased deed parcels

  • The second "plop" wins $300.00 or 3% of the total purchased deed parcels

  • The third "plop" wins $500.00 or 5% of the total purchased deed parcels

*        If all deeds are not sold, the winning prizes will be equivalent to ten percent of the total amount purchased under State of California non-profit rules.

  1. If the "cow chip" lands on bordering parcels (on the line), the prize money will be divided equally among the owners of all affected parcels regardless of the volume on each parcel.

  2. If the "cow chip" lands on an unsold lot, the measurement will move one lot north.  If that lot is also unsold the measurement will move clockwise around the originally plopped upon lot until a winner is declared.

  3. If a cow does not "plop" after a designated amount of time, the winning parcel will be determined by where the cow's right rear hoof has landed at the designated time called.

  4. Winners do not need to be present to win.  Winners will be notified by phone and/or email.  Winners will be posted on the WCHS website as of Tuesday, April 21th.   Winners must provide proof of deed ownership and claim their prize by July 25, 2010.  Any unclaimed prizes after July 25, 2010 will be considered a donation to the Western Christian High School Athletic Booster Committee.
