Back surgery for Booty

Quarterback John David Booty will require surgery Friday for the herniated disc in his back, which raises questions about whether he will recover in time for the start of training camp.

Doctors estimate Booty will require about three months to recover, which means he may not be in shape to throw when training camp begins in early August.
USC coach Pete Carroll said Bootys surgery means he won’t name a starting quarterback in spring practice and will probably have to wait until the end of training camp.
“There are no rules here, Carroll said. “Well just keep going. Unfortunately for John David, he wasnt able to establish himself (because of the injury). Its going to be very competitive in the fall.
