Draft Mystery

One of USCs disappointments during the NFL draft was safety Darnell Bing slipping to the fourth round, where the Raiders selected him and apparently will try to move him to linebacker.
With that in mind, I asked an NFL GM why Bing slipped?
“If he was that good, why did Buffalo take a 5-9, 200-pound safety (Donte Whitner) with the eighth pick?” the GM said.
Apparently, NFL people were also turned off by the Nike Sparq timing system used at USC on Pro Day. Although Bing was announced as running the 40 in 4.53 seconds, all NFL teams recorded him around 4.64.
“People didn’t know how to deal with him, what position he should play. If I take a safety, I’m looking for a rocket, the GM said.
