Morning buzz
Coming today: Updated QB rankings and a chance to ask Pete Carroll a question.
Question of the morning
Quote of the night
“They are playing pretty well. None are great and none are eliminated from the race.
— offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian on the quarterbacks
Baseball talk
Pete Carroll told me four different times he hit three homers in batting practice at the Coliseum (including back-to-back), so it must mean it’s important. Maybe he can play for the USC baseball team, which got swept by Arizona State over the weekend and lost 10 of its past 12 games.
Final Four
USC played three of the teams in the Final Four and went 1-4 against them.
About special teams
Pete Carroll is not thrilled with the long-snappers right now, which experience problems on field goals and punts.
“We’re not even a C- right now,” he said Sunday.
Backup kicker Jordan Congdon fluttered a 38-yard field goal during practice that was short and wide right during practice. One of the criticisms when he played at Nebraska was kicking from distance.
Blast from the past
Will Poole, Tom Malone, Darryl Poston and Troy Van Blarcom are scheduled to participate in USC’s Pro Day workouts before NFL teams.
Quarterback update
Another one of those mixed days for the quarterbacks, as they dealt with a live-pass rush in full pads and experienced problems dealing with the blitz.
The practice ended with Mitch Mustain throwing about a 45-yard touchdown pass to Ronald Johnson. However, Johnson was so far behind the secondary, he looked like a punt returner waiting to catch the ball, which was high and short, but still catchable.
“It was an ugly throw,” Mustain said. “I felt like we made some Day 1 mistakes. That was frustrating.”
