Numbers of teams gracing BCS standings annually from 1998- 2008 (Top 15 from 1998-Oct. 18, 2003 – Top 25 starting on Oct. 25, 2003) include: 1998 – 26; 1999 – 19; 2000 – 23; 2001 – 23; 2002 – 21; 2003 – 32; 2004 – 34; 2005 – 32; 2006 – 35; 2007 – 34; and 2008 – 39.

On Nov. 26, 1988, for the first time in series history, Notre Dame and USC entered the game undefeated and occupying the top two spots in the nation.
Fighting Irish quarterback Tony Rice rushed 65 yards for a touchdown, while cornerback Stan Smagala intercepted USC quarterback Rodney Peete’s pass and returned it for a score to secure a 27-10 victory at the Coliseum.

Lunch Time

Pete Carroll and Charlie Weis are currently downtown at the traditional USC-Notre Dame luncheon.
“I was surprised I couldn’t justify getting out of it,” Carroll joked Thursday,when asked about attending the lunch the day before the game. “But I understand the tradition.”
The event conflicts with the 12:30 p.m. coaches’ meetings Carroll holds on Fridays before home games.
“We have meetings I can’t make,” he said.
