Barkley On Practice

Here’s some reaction from Matt Barkley:
“I was having a blast out there. I thought I did OK. I didn’t think it was too bad for a first day. The timing (is something to work on), I’m still trying to get used to the individual receivers and routes.
“I have to get used to checking down to the running backs and letting them do their thing. We’ve got some great running backs.”

QB Rankings

We continue our tradition of ranking the quarterbacks during open competition. Despite the recent resurgence of the dollar, we still use Euros here with 4 Euros being excellent and 1 Euro meaning it’s time to transfer.
Here’s today’s rankings:

Aaron Corp (three Euros)
Mitch Mustain * (2.5 Euros)
Matt Barkley * (2.5 Euros)

In The Spotlight

And We’re Off

The longest practice is spring is finally over. New QB coach Jeremy Bates said it was one of the fastest practices he’s ever been in (of course). No earth-shattering developments at quarterback although Matt Barkley was first up in the rotation during the team scrimmage portion.
Among those in attendance: Chris Claiborne, Keary Colbert, Chilo Rachal, Rey Maualuga, Patrick Turner, Brian Cushing.

Welcome Change

The quarterbacks are also happier with the new coaching setup because Jeremy Bates is focused exclusively on the quarterbacks even though he calls plays because wide receivers coach John Morton is technically the offensive coordinator.
“He’s a lot more focused on us because he’s not technically the offensive coordinator,” Aaron Corp said. “I really like it. It will help me and the rest of the quarterbacks.”

QB Timetable

Pete Carroll on choosing a quarterback.
“If I had my druthers, I’d rather have it settled by the end of the spring. I don’t know that it will take place.”

Split Reps

All four quarterbacks are expected to receive snaps with the first team before any decisions are made on who gets more.
“They said we all would get a chance the first few days,” Aaron Corp said. “And that we’d all take reps with the 1’s, 2’s and 3’s.”

Corp Check

Quarterback Aaron Corp will start spring practice at 206 pounds, which means he gained about six pounds since the Rose Bowl.

First Time For Everything

Offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates never recruited before because he’s always coached in the NFL.
“All the assistant coaches are helping me out,” Bates said. “It’s important because in recruiting it’s like you’re trying to sign 22-25 first-round draft picks.”
