Morning Buzz
USC’s in fourth place after Day 1 of the West Regionals track meet in Eugene, Ore., as high jumper Manjula Wijesekara won with a jump of 7-04.5. Corey White finished third in the javelin (237-07).
The women are in seventh place thanks to Eva Orban’s victory in the hammer throw (220-05).
Weekend Ahead
The track team competes in the West Regionals at Eugene, Ore., while the rowing and men’s golf teams are in the NCAA championships.
Private School Handicap?
I’ve heard the excuse in some circles that baseball’s struggles are directly due to the fact private schools cannot put together a large roster with the 11.2 scholarship limit. It’s obviously a big burden for USC or other private universities.
But a quick check of the top 25 polls shows Rice, TCU, Gonzaga and Elon (Elon!) seem to be doing something right. And USC did make the NCAA Tournament in 15 of Mike Gillespie’s 20 seasons.

Money Conference
The SEC will distribute approximately $132.5 million to its schools at the end of the current fiscal year. The average amount distributed to each school was $11.1 million.
The league made $52 million from football television, $25.4 million from bowls, $14.3 million from the SEC Football Championship, $13.6 million from basketball television, $4.1 million from the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament and $23.1 million from NCAA Championships.
