Ayles Issue

Pete Carroll said tight end Blake Ayles’ recovery from knee surgery is the only real health issue facing USC.
“Whether he can go full speed is the issue,” Carroll said. “That’s probably the biggest question in my mind. Can he go full speed? Plus we’re already thin at that position.”

Defensive Weakness?

Safety Taylor Mays was asked if the defense will be a weakness this season?
“People ask, `You lost eight people to the NFL and you lost big name guys on defense?’ We know what we have in the locker room and the guys we bring in our recruitng class. We have such potential that we know what we can do. We must recreate it and find out what it takes for us to be successful. If we can convey that to the to younger guys and get them on that train and undersatnd how we do it, then we’lll be all right.”

Lost In Shuffle

Former USC tailback Broderick Green was cleared to play immediately at Arkansas by the NCAA because he moved home to be near his ailing grandmother.
“I am excited about the opportunity to play for Arkansas this season,” Green said. “I appreciate the support of coach (Bobby) Petrino, the rest of the coaching staff and the athletic department administration in helping make this outcome a reality.”
You might remember the NCAA denied a similar request last season for USC basketball player Alex Stepheson.

White Jerseys?

I told Washington coach Steve Sarkisian yesterday that he should wear white jerseys at home against LSU so the Tigers will be forced to wear their purple jerseys.
“I’ve thought about it,” Sarksian said.
Then he joked, “I don’t want to make them too mad, we’ve got to go play them back there in 2012.”

Friendly Rivals

Steve Sarkisian and Pete Carroll spoke to each other several times during Pac-10 media day and it’s clear the pair remain friends. Now if former defensive coordinator Nick Holt were in attendance, that might be a different story.
