Nine Or 10?
Would Boston College QB Dave Shinskie not start for nine or 10 Pac-10 teams?
Distractions U.
Boston College coach Frank Spaziani complimented USC after the game for surviving the McKnight controversy and academic ineligibility of three players.
“They did better than a good job with all the distractions they had,” Spaziani said.
Sideline Fun
After the game Pete Carroll raved about the unique sideline situation, where both teams shared one side of the field so fans could view the game properly in AT&T Park, which was built for baseball.
“We had a lot of interaction (with Boston College coaches),” Carroll said. “We interacted a number of times where we wouldn’t otherwise. It was cool.”
One example occurred early when USC’s headsets malfunctioned. Carroll asked Boston College to remove their headsets. A 10-yard buffer zone was created by fencing at midfield to separate the two teams from mingling with each other.
Bowl Numbers
Matt Barkley’s 350 passing yards was the fifth-best USC bowl performance, and the 28th best overall, since 1926.
Damian William’s 189 receiving yards ranks 11th on USC’s all time receiving-yard list, since 1926, and the fourth-best USC bowl performance. Williams’ 162 receiving yards in the 2009 Rose Bowl ranks fifth on the USC bowl receiving yards list.
Morning Buzz
USC did not make any dramatic improvements but played more than well enough to defeat Boston College.
