What do you think is the real story about Lil Romeo’s absence from the MBB team?

A: I don’t think he enjoyed this season as much as his freshman season with the coaching change and Kevin O’Neill wante the scholarship back, so there was a basis for a mutual decision on his status.

I noticed USC just received a commitment from Armstead’s brother who is also a basketball player. Would his scholarsip be from the basketball team and do you see USC going after many more two-sport athletes during sanctions? Maybe they should get a kicker from the soccer team…

A: The NCAA does not allow you to play football and be on a scholarship in a minor sport, such as soccer to avoid stockpiling athletes. For example, when Gregg Guenther played football and basketball at USC, he had to be on a football scholarship.

  1. Would basketball be considered minor? And in normal times, couldn’t you give a football scholarship to a baseball player since baseball has limited (11.8?) scholarships?

  2. Hi Scott,

It is my understanding that they only are counted after they start playing during actual games. That can relieve them of the scholarship being counted against the football program for one to two years. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
