Bowl Break

Matt Barkley on how it will be to not have bowl practices or a bowl game this season and how he will spend his time.
“I’ve thought about that a lot. I’ll probably go overseas and go on a mission trip. Maybe Africa. Maybe South America. It’s a unique opportunity.”

  1. While in high school Matt already went on two missions with his church. One to Mexico to help the needy and one to Africa. He takes church very seriously as he does helping people in need. He has also started a church service for the team with the help of CJ Gable that they do not talk about for publicity. He is always trying to help and a true team leader.

  2. Back off the kid for trying to do good. I’ve often found that those who criticize people like Barkley lack the courage to look in the mirror.

Besides, you gotta hand it to Tebow. He walks the talk.

  3. I think the problem some people have with others that do good charity work is that it so often is done in the name of the church, their particular church, so it comes off as a form of proselytizing.

If they would simply do the good works in their name only there probably wouldn’t be a problem

  4. Just remember the contrasting lasting media images after the 2008 losses by Florida & USC. In the Trojans case, it was Sanchez throwing his mouthpiece against the wall in another “USC Screwed up again” moment. In Florida’s case it was “The Promise” and not Tebow getting stuffed on 4th & 1 to end the game. Tebow & Meyer pulled off the biggest Marketing Snow Job in NCAA History…everyone quickly forgot a home loss in which they gave up 31 points. All they needed to do to get to the BCS Title game was to “Fulfill the Promise”. USC had no chance to overcome that crap.

  5. @SECTION 12 ROW 52: I’m curious, if you don’t me asking, what was your opinion regarding Osborne’s Cornhuskers splitting the 97 title with Carr’s Wolverines?

  6. NJ Trojan: Nebraska had a couple of great teams in 94 & 95. That reputation helped them in 97 with a lesser unit. Michigan had bigger margins of victory over 2 common opponents, (Colorado & Baylor) and played Notre Dame in non-conference while Nebraska played Akron. I believe Nebraska had the miracle win against Missouri that year as well. I thought Michigan was the better team that year and should not have shared the title.

  7. How disappointing it is to read the comments posted by some of you USC supporters and or haters. It is obvious that some of you don’t believe in God and are the sons of Satan.

To Lawyer John, when one believes in Christ (God in the Flesh) one does not do good deeds to for him/herself so that people can say “what a great guy he is” NO, you do it in the name of Jesus, for the glory belongs to Jesus, of it is Jesus that deserves all the Glory for He gave himself to sacrifice so that any who call upon his name will be saved.

Speedjones, How dare you!! If you don’t believe in Jesus, that is YOUR problem but don’t knock Barkley for doing something out of love for humanity and for wanting to help those less fortunate.

    Shame on you people.

  8. LawyerJohn has got it right.

Plus, why does he have to go to Africa or South America? There’s plenty he can do in SoCal without cramming his religion down people’s throats thousands of miles from here.

  9. @SECTION 12 ROW 52: Thanks for responding. I was at the USC-Penn State game in 94, and lived in PA that year. I came away thinking that the Lions should have won the NC over the “Huskers. And I agree, Michigan was the better team. I thought the ‘Huskers only won a piece of the NC in 97 because of Osborne’ good guy image.

  10. Right on NDLarry. Spedjones, you just showed you are a pagan fool. Typical ucla.

  11. TrojanInVenice, why does Barkley have to Africa or South america? because those regions of the world don’t have the gospel of Jesus the way we do here in the states. We have the word of God being taught in many churches all over town, while Many of those countries are pagan and need the word of God to be taught, that is why there are so many missionaries.

If you’re a diciple of Jesus you must follow his commandments which say “go to all corners of the world and teach his word” NOT “cramming” his religion down people’s throat as you put it. Noone has to accept it, you have the option to reject it as well.

In many countries such as China, or North Korea people have underground Bible studies because the government prohibits Christianity to be taught.

    Barkley, bravo!!!

  12. ND Larry, there is no shortage of Christianity in South America — it was forced upon the indigenous peoples by the Spanish hundreds of years ago. Part of the sad legacy of genocide, slavery, exploitation, colonialism, and empire-building in the name of God and gold.

Padre: “Indians, worship Christ and work for me like a slave, or die!”

Hopefully, Barkley will take a more mellow approach.

And I hope you support the efforts of Muslim Americans to build their own mosques here in the United States, since you approve of Christian Americans going abroad to push Jesus on indigenous peoples.

  13. haha, looks like trogans are dopes twice over… first they pay way too much for an average education and then they believe in the imaginary man in the sky. Personally, I’m a member of Peter Griffin’s Church of the Fonz. Heeeeyyyyyyy!

  14. Old School Marxist: No I don’t support Pagan religions like Islam, I don’t support any religion that crashes airplanes into tall buildingw and kills thousands of innocent civilians in the name of “allah” a PAGAN “make believe” god of the “moon” hense the half-moon on their flags.

I don’t support a religion that has has a passion to blow up two countries from the face of the earth, Israel, and the United States, and that has promised to take over the United States frin the inside-out and so far I think they’re doing exactly what they said they would do, don’t you think? afterall we have Mr. Barack Hussein Obama as our president, I would say that is one hell of a start, wouldn’t you? Brace yourselves, the beginning of turmoil in our country hasn’t even started, thanks to all you liberals that wanted God out of our country.

Funny how many of you don’t believe in God, yet you are so quick to blame God when the sh!t hits the fan like Katrina, twin towers etc, God have mercy on us.

I only support the True and LIVING God, who died on the cross and who rose from the dead on the third day and lived amongst us for 40 days before physically ascending on the clouds to heaven after promising to come back on his 2nd coming.

Christians worship the true LIVING God, not some phony make believe idiotic jackass god that promises the ignorant martyrs 72 virgins in heaven if they kill innocent people in his name.

  15. FROM THE DESK OF RALPH VON ALBERTSON, ESQ.:

NDLarry, your deranged rant was most amusing. By all means, preach on! Our nation’s churches are indeed vital institutions, and the many clients I have gained at Saint Nigel Episcopal of Hancock Park have more than made up for the many hours I have spent suffering through the reverend’s tiresome sermonizing.

Nonetheless, I must add that although I have no particular fondness for the Papacy, it is a sad day when an alumnus of a proud Catholic institution like Notre Dame seems to have turned instead to second-rate con men like Glenn Beck and Pat Robertson for his theology.

NDLarry, here is a Sunday school lesson for you: while you and your hillbilly brethren are being swindled into squandering your money on Glenn Beck’s gold coins, I have entrusted my financial health to a shrewd, Stanford-educated Hebrew. Just as Jesus was able to feed the masses with a few loaves and fishes, so too does my pork-avoiding accountant multiply my assets with near-magical ability. God bless His chosen people!

In any event, as embarrassing as your gibberish may be for your fellow Catholics, I do hope that your foolishness is typical among Notre Dame men these days, as such slow-witted dolts shall fall before Stanford’s linemen like wheat before the scythe.

And by the way, NDLarry, I have followed your back-and-forth with Mr. NOBS, and I must say, I do not believe that you have the funds to accept his bet.

Best regards to the rest of you,

Ralph Von Albertson, Esq., Stanford ’95, ’99

    (dictated but not read)

  16. Wow – NDLarry is a kook of the kookiest sort. I bet he believes in the tooth fairy too. He sure is lucky that the religion his mommy and daddy taught him just happens to be the one “real” religion. All those poor Muslims, Hindus, Jews and Church of Fonzies have it all wrong and are doomed…. DOOOMED I TELLS YOU! Heeeeyyyyy!

  17. @The Gipper: C’mon Randy…are you and the ‘possum going to let Ralph Von Albertson, Esq., Stanford ’95, ’99, get away with that fancy smack talk? What’s Teo going to do to Luck?

  18. So there you have today’s Republican party, represented in miniature here on this blog — greedy capitalists like Ralph Von Albertson control our country by manipulating religious nutjobs like NDLarry into voting their cronies into office. While NDLarry wants a war with Muslims everywhere, Ralph Von Albertson probably owns stock in defense contractors and Halliburton.

As spedjones points out, how lucky for NDLarry that he was brought up with the correct religion. FYI, Larry, Islam is an Abrahamic religion like Judaism and Christianity; it is not “pagan,” whatever you may mean by that.

NDLarry, if you don’t think that Muslims should be able to build mosques in America because Muslim terrorists attacked us on 9/11, wouldn’t you agree that Israel should forbid the construction and operation of Christian churches within its borders, given the dismal treatment of Jews at the hands of Christians over the past 2,000 years?

And should Christians be able to build churches in Oklahoma City? I bet Timothy McVeigh loved Jesus.

  19. Now feeling sorry for our Catholic friend from ND who, despite all his churchie studies, apparently doesn’t even know the basic facts of Islam, the world’s 2nd largest religion. I have to assume there were religious studies courses at ND – shame Catholics don’t actually take them.

  20. larry–my religion is usc football. it is THE true LIVING religion. all other religions are dead, just like domer and bruin football. usc football is living. it lives, it breathes, it thrives, it grows.

    suck it suckas…

  21. and cheats, and gets sanctioned, and pretends it loses its cell phone after other programs try to “illegally recruit” it…

  22. Speedjones, yes Islam is the second larges religion in the world and at the rate they’re going within 20 years they will be the largest, what is your point? are you implying that because they are the second largest religion they hold the truth?

Oldschoolmarxist, what the hell are you talking about? do you know anything about the Bible? my guess is not. The Jews are God’s chosen people. The Jews have been victims of every civilization (the Nazis most recently) yet God has been with them all along, read the book of Isiah, God promised the Jews that in the last days the Jews would once again call Israel “home” and after 2000 years Palestine became Israel again in March of 1947.

Israel a tiny nation has the best trained military in the world they took on half/dozen nations that attacked them in 1969 and in 6 days they destroyed those Muslim nations. God said I will bless those that bless my people (Jews) and I will curse those that curse my people. Why do you think our nation has been blessed from the beginning? God was the cornerstone of our nation from the beginning…and now? Our nation has literally kicked God out, and our nation is no longer supporting Israel, with our Muslim President.

Christians didn’t kill Jews 2000 years ago, where are you getting your information from? it was the Christians that were killed in Israel and all over Europe and the middle east by the Roman Empire when they still ruled.

After the days of Jesus, Cesar ordered every Christian to be killed unless they would claim that Cesar is Lord and not Jesus. And guess what? the Bible in the book of Revelation says very clearly that in the last days this world would have to accept the mark of the beast on their right hand or on their forehead in order to buy, sell, trade, everything! we will live in a one world order government with one monetary system (cash-less) hence the micro chip inserted in the wrist/forehead for easy scanning when shopping etc…it also says that if refuse the mark of the beast (the chip) you will be considered an infidel and you shall be “beheaded” and who “beheads” infidels? yup! the Muslims…who is running our country? yup! a Muslim…and what religion is being taught in many schools in our country? NOPE not Christianity, YUP it’s Islam. But Jesus also said that those that would NOT take the mark (chip) would become martyrs and would be beheaded were promised God’s Kingdom not hell, like those that will accept the chip.

Welcome to the beginning of the most troubling times our nation and our world has ever seen…we are living in the last days. Americans of White descent have 1.6 children per family while Muslims have an average of 7 children per family if not for Latino Americans having an average of 3 children per family, the Muslim population would outnumber us in 30 years…in 1975 there were only 12 Masques in the country, today there are over 4000 and growing every day. In England and France the Muslims now are the majority. We are living in the last days.

    Any questions class? 🙂

  23. haha, whoooohhh ahahaha. The last days always seem to be right around the corner. I peg the last days in about 4.5 billion years when that pesky sun eats the earth.

And, no, of course I’m not suggesting Islam holds the truth, anymore than I’d suggest Christianity does. Science holds the truth, but they apparently don’t teach that at ND either.

  24. Wow. This thread has some of the most insane stuff I have ever seen on this blog. NDLarry, I don’t think you even went to Notre Dame. The Catholics I know are not ignorant bigots like you. Whatever the sad state of its football team may be, Notre Dame is a respected university, and it does not promote the utter nonsense that you have embarrassed yourself with in your posts.

Who do you know who has a microchip implanted in their bodies? I can think of only one individual, and that would be my dog. On this subject, you are a paranoid, misinformed buffoon.

Islam is being “taught in our schools”? What baloney. While Islam may be discussed in social studies, geography, history, or comparative religion classes, the idea that American students are being indoctrinated into Islam is sheer fantasy. Meanwhile, thousands of private Christian schools exist in our country, and the vast, vast majority of public school students are Christian as well. On this subject also, you are a paranoid, misinformed buffoon.

American Muslims have an average of 7 children per family? Muslims are now majorities in the U.K. and France? Why don’t you provide us with the sources of these dubious statistics? Good luck — you have spewed a bunch of make-believe garbage. On these subjects as well, you are a paranoid, misinformed buffoon.

I believe “the marxist” was making the point that you are blaming all Muslims across the globe for the actions of individual Muslim terrorists, yet you do not condemn Christianity based on the crimes of individual Christian murderers, such as the Nazis, Timothy McVeigh, or, to add an example, the Spanish Inquisition (who were rather rough on the Jews). Clearly, you cannot think critically about the vile malarkey you have posted, because you are blinded by your own paranoia, bigotry, and ignorance.

I wonder if you have ever had a Muslim friend or co-worker. I wonder if you have ever eaten dinner with a Muslim. When I was a teenager in Indiana, one of my friends in high school was a Muslim, and when I think of your outrageous accusations applied to her and to her family, I feel very sad that some of my fellow Americans are swallowing such hateful, moronic idiocy.

“NDLarry,” whatever your real name may be, if the good people at Notre Dame could see what you are writing on this blog in their name, they would beg you to stop. You are embarrassing yourself and the university you claim to represent. You should be ashamed of yourself.

And yes, this post is full of name-calling, because you have proven that you deserve to be called names, and those names are: idiot, racist, bigot, and ignorant, superstitious fool.

And by the way, even an idiot as moronic as yourself should know that Notre Dame is going to get slaughtered at the Coliseum this year.

  25. Cafe 84 pizza, don’t hate the messenger. I’m only giving you information about what the Bible says, it is your choice to accept it or reject it, it is obvious you’re a liberal, and you believe in tolerating all the things that are ruining our country, and you have your head stuck up your ass so deep that you can’t see what’s going on around you.

I never said that all Muslims are bad people, you ignorant jackass. And I could care less about what Notre Dame thinks, it’s not about Notre Dame, you shallow minded prick.

  26. Speedjones, science? LOL it take 1000 times more faith to believe that and it does in a creator. It’s like like saying that you were standing outside of the Nokia center and there would be a huge explosion across the street and when the smoke cleared poof! there is the Staples Center!! no, the staples center was created, and so is our existence…male/female, eyes, ears, mouth, nose, tongue, etc. The theory of science is for idiots, I suppose you think Jesus never existed?

  27. Nope, I’m fairly certain a guy named Jesus existed. He was likely Persian (looking nothing like the American Jesus you love) who was a good guy but nothing special. Where you and I differ is in thinking his mommy was a virgin, that he somehow rose from the dead, turned water into wine etc. I have no need to believe in an ultimate creator and am completely at ease with the idea that my existence is purely by chance. The more science explains the less credible and necessary religion becomes. But, if it makes you feel good at night to think some guy’s up there watching over you, good on ya. I just hope you’ve picked the right religion – because if not, you’re probably worse off than I am by worshiping a false God.

  28. speed, that is your opinion and you’re free to believe what you choose, fine. I don’t believe in any religions, Chirstianity is not a religion, it is having a persobal relationship with Jesus. How would I be worse off than you for worshipping a false God? Anyhoo, this will be my last post on religion. Now back to football, I sure hope UCLA beats the trOJies this year and you just might, becuase after my boys are going to take the air out of them.

  29. Worshiping a false god a sin… I’m just a non-believer, you’re a wrong believer and a sinner. I win.

  30. NDLarry, you claim that you never said all Muslims were bad people. Well, let’s review what you DID say:

“No I don’t support Pagan religions like Islam, I don’t support any religion that crashes airplanes into tall buildingw and kills thousands of innocent civilians in the name of “allah”[.]”

“I don’t support a religion that has has a passion to blow up two countries from the face of the earth, Israel, and the United States[.]”

“who “beheads” infidels? yup! the Muslims”

“if not for Latino Americans having an average of 3 children per family, the Muslim population would outnumber us in 30 years…in 1975 there were only 12 Masques in the country, today there are over 4000 and growing every day. In England and France the Muslims now are the majority. We are living in the last days.”

Yeah, I guess you’re right — why on earth would a Muslim get the idea that you had an issue with Muslim people?

Other than that, you ignored all my other points/questions and resorted to using profanities. You make a real classy ambassador for Christ.

Thankfully, most Christians are humane, decent people, not paranoid clowns obsessed with microchips, the Rapture, and Muslim fertility rates.

  31. Cafe 84,
Many Bible scholars and theologians believe that the mark of the beast “666” that will be placed on the right hand or on forehead, is a microchip. In many years past before the computer age “666” might have been hard to figure out, but not anymore. The computer chip is being used in many parts of the world already, but being used mostly on pets.

At the Geneva conventions, top security corporations have introduced the idea of using it on humans because of the widespread of identity theft, and have also proposed to use it for the elderly in which that chip would contain all their personal information that includes but not limited to SS#, bank accounts, and specially their medications, because there are a lot of our seniors with Alzheimer’s decease that wander off and need medication, as well as those that pass out because they’re diabetic and their sugar level has dropped, etc.

With a chip inserted on humans there would be no need for cash, we are headed in the direction of a cashless society. As you know in Europe, there is now the Euro. I could go on and on. I recommend you read the book of Revelation, but specially attend a Bible teaching church where you can learn what the prophets prophesied and how most of the prophecies have come to pass. Even if you’re not a believer, you will blow your mind at how precise the Bible is, specially right at this time and age, it’s crazy.

  33. Spedjones,
What i’m trying to say is that each country in Europe had their own currency, and now they have one, the “Euro”, just as you free to travel in Europe with one passport.

Eventually the whole world will have one currency, once the chip is in place under the “one world government”, religion, etc., since it will be a cashless society, if you don’t have the “chip” you’re shit out of luck, you won’t be able to but, sell, trade, etc. this will be during the 7 year tribulation which are the hardest times this world has ever seen, or will see…the last 7 years, before the great battle of Armageddon which is when Jesus will make his second appearance, but this time he’s coming to rescue Israel as Iraq, Iran, and all the Muslim nations along with Russia, China, and every nation in that region will come to Israel to wipe them out, Jesus will come and destroy all those and the bible says there will be 280 mile square five feet deep with men’s blood.

There will be men with “special suits” picking up all the bodies because those bodies have been contaminated, hmmmm. Two thousand years ago, this would not make sense when you read that in the Bible, but today it’s very clear what that passage means…could it be because of all the radioactive materials from Nuclear weapons used in that war? isn’t that what Iran is threatening to do now to Israel?

The union of the European nations as “one” is prophesied in the Bible, scholars have indicated that it is the revival of the old Roman Empire, and out of this empire one King will be elected by the world’s nations as the “King” and the king will end up being the “antiChrist” and that antiChrist will appoint the religious leader “false prophet” and the whole world will be deceived by the “beast” who controls the 1. antichrist 2. false prophet the three form the evil trinity (three) which will rivals the Holy Trinity of 1. God 2. God the Son and 3. the Holy Spirt.

    Questions, anyone?

  34. sorry Bud, but this makes less sense today than it did 2,000 years ago.

Re the single ruler theory, you’ve got it all wrong. We’ll all be Chinese in 100 years.
