Regime Change

Lane Kiffin will be doing things differently on the road trip with his approach to pre-game walkthroughs and other things compared to his predecessor, Pete Carroll.
“There’s a million ways to do things,” Kiffin said. “It’s going to be a little bit tighter. That doesn’t mean its better by any means. The old way won 34 straight games and seven straight conference championships.
“But you have to be yourself and you have to let your own personality on your team. We’ll be a little tighter with them and not quite as loose.”

  1. @Westwood Robinson – I read on one of the recruiting websites that Max Globus has given his verbal commitment to Boise St, spurning his father’s alma mater. What happened? – he was considered a lock.

  2. Definitely some strange goings on in Boise regarding Max Globus. My sources in Westwood tell me Globus was shopping a package deal for his high school wide receiver Robbie Maxim and Coach Neuheisel said no way. UCLA would never offer a package deal to land a player. Principled stands like that cost us some players, much like our ridiculously high academic standards. It never ceases to amaze me the number of 5 star recruits that don’t even list UCLA because our standards are so high.

  3. ha ha good one UCLA! We should say that when we get into basketball recruiting season! Did you hear Jim Harbaugh and Jeff Tedford complaining about high standards and recruiting recently? Oh, neither did I…

  4. @Dingleberry and UCLA Dynasty: Sad but true — Golan Globus was a great QB for UCLA back in the day, throwing bombs to WR Vlad Gazpacho or handing it off to RB Manny De La Mancha, but after he graduated he went all Hollywood (he even produced the 1980’s “Masters of the Universe” movie — look it up), and now his son has turned into the kind of recruit who thinks he can call the shots when the college coaches come begging. I guess that’s what they learn at Oaks Christian!

It’s like when USC agreed to take OJ Mayo just so they could get Ice Cube’s son to come play basketball — and look how that blew up in USC’s face!

That’s why I think Coach Rick is wise to keep his nose clean and avoid these package-deal guys, but our academic standards have been holding us back. That’s the silver lining of UCLA’s drop in the US News Rankings below USC — now the BruWins are going to get the best of the best, footballically-speaking.

  5. My sources in westwood have told me that the package deal story is just spin and that Daddy is worried because he believes that crn will be out after this season and that dan might really screw the pooch on his next hail mary coach. Does not want to take that chance with his son. Can’t say I blame him.

AKA OCDave on the green board

  6. @VB’s Office Plant, your source “leaves” much to be desired. The UCLA job belongs to Coach Rick for as long as he wants it — likely until LA finally gets a new NFL team, which Coach Rick will then be the coach of.
