Are you concerned about the way USC played in the second half of the California game, there were penalties, fumbles, missed opportunities, and California outscored USC 14 to 6 in the second half. USC could have scored more points, the defense allowed two touchdowns, there were penalities such as delay of game, personal fouls, and two fumbles. Are you concerned about the second half play?

A: Yes and No. I think it’s natural to have a letdown when you are up so big at halftime. Also, look at the walk-ons that played on defense in the second half against Cal. It was a makeshift group. On the other hand, some of things you mentioned (especially penalties) remain an issue for USC and will be critical against a quality team like Oregon.

Why is USC not using Markeith Ambles more since he cannot redshirt and what is Markeith Ambles’ reaction to less playing time?

A: Ambles is frustrated but buoyed by the fact he got more snaps in practice this week. I’m not quite sure why he did not redshirt from the beginning of the season and then Lane Kiffin tried to see if he could redshirt after the first game. It was too late, however, so now he needs to play. He is also not playing despite the fact two other wide receivers (Kyle Prater, De’von Flournoy) are redshirting.

  1. Scott forgot to mention the playbook has been a problem for Ambles and Flournoy, and to a lesser extent Prater. Learning the playbook and being where you’re supposed to be is something that sets Robert Woods apart from the other three, plus more talent doesn’t hurt.

  2. Also a true Elvis fan which is part of my password. Regarding Ambles, Carroll became disinterested in recruiting him after the initial contact so maybe he had an insight into his ability and/or character. Seems strange that after only one game could not redshirt while other players find ways two or three games into the season.
