You have said USC can sign 15 recruits in February per NCAA sanctions, but as I read it USC “accepted” a 15 scholarship limitation over 3 years per their appeal, which is half of the NCAA imposed 30. If the NCAA does not rule on the appeal by signing day, it seems to me that USC can sign 20 recruits in February. In the event the NCAA does not move off of their insane 30 scholarship reduction, USC could make up the difference 3 years from now. Do you know if this is right? And if USC has that option, what do you think they should do?

A: I have spoken to Pat Haden about this and he would like to hear a decision on the appeal by signing date precisely because USC does not want to buck the NCAA sanctions while waiting for the appeal decision. The coaching staff is also operating under the 15-scholarship limit for February.

Have you written a “where are they now” piece on the guys that left recently? It would be interesting to see how leaving the program benefited most guys and how successful they may have been if they stayed, especially considering our depth, now.

For example, I see Byron Moore is finishing JC and back in the recruiting process. Even going back further, I see an article in Gator Bytes, “RB Emmanuel Moody fine with reduced role”.

A: Not a bad idea.

Why is it that USC cannot stop a third and long? It’s been the Achilles heel all year long and it almost cost us the game against the Wildcats. Isn’t it the goal of the defense on first and second down to get the offense into a third and long situation? I’m exasperated!

A: Stopping any kind of pass has been a challenge this season. USC did better against Oregon State, but that raises a question? Can Monte Kiffin stop a spread offense? I think that’s been an ongoing issue for the defense and will continue to next season because of his unfamiliarity with the spread.

  1. It seems like a 3-4 with a linebacker or secondary blitzer would work better against the spread.
