USC 5th
USC is currently ranked 5th in the nation in Rivals and Scout’s recruiting rankings as we head into Wednesday’s signing date. Recruiting enters a dead period Monday through signing date, which means coaches can only speak to recruits if the recruits call them.
Senior Bowl Stats
USC cornerback Shareece Wright made three tackles and broke up a pass in today’s Senior Bowl. Wide receiver Ronald Johnson caught one pass for 12 yards, returned a punt nine yards and returned two kickoffs for 21 yards. Center Kris O’Dowd started for the South team.
Arizona 82, USC 73
Or maybe the score should read USC 82, USC 73 as the Wildcats got 39 points from former USC recruits Derrick Williams, Lamont Jones and Solomon Hill.
Nikola Vucevic had 18 for the Trojans. A split wasn’t bad for the Arizona trip except for the fact USC’s split some of its homestands and needs some sweeps.
Mayo Defense
Former USC basketball player O.J. Mayo claimed an energy drink he bought at a gas station contained a substance that led to his 10-game suspension. Not even Tim Floyd came up with such creative answers when he defended Mayo.
Moore Announcement
Former USC safety Byron Moore will announce Monday if he will transfer to Tennessee or Miami after spending this year at Harbor College. Yes, the same Miami where Lane Kiffin’s god-brother, Brennan Carroll, is the recruiting coordinator.
Recruit Watch
Mater Dei guard Katin Reinhardt, a junior who committed to USC last month, scored 16 points last night in a victory over Orange Lutheran. USC is also recruiting Orange Lutheran guard Gabe York, who scored 14 points.
Morning Buzz
Defensive tackle David Moala, the cousin of former USC defensive tackle Fili Moala and teammate of USC recruit George Farmer, appears headed for Arizona State.
Rare Sweep
USC seeks its first sweep of the Arizona schools since 1985 when the Trojans play Arizona in Tucson.
More Linemen
The commitment of offensive guard Cyrus Hobbi is a good pickup but USC still needs more offensive linemen. The Trojans have just two commitments from offensive linemen — Hobbi and Crenshaw’s Marcus Martin.
That’s why the decisions of offensive tackle Antonio Richardson of Nashville and offensive guard Aundrey Walker of Cleveland will be important.
Even today, a member of the football program wondered how former recruiting coordinator Brennan Carroll did not sign more linemen in Pete Carroll’s final two seasons.
