Why did USC coach Lane Kiffin hire Nebraska assistant Ted Gilmore as the Trojans’ new wide receivers coach? Because Gilmore was the Cornhuskers’ recruiting coordinator the past four seasons. Recruiting is more important than ever if NCAA sanctions take effect next year and Kiffin needs few or no weak links in this dept.
So if he had to pay, oh, $350,000, to hire him, it’s worth it.
Then again, there was speculation in Nebraska last month if Gilmore was even being retained on staff, especially after he did not attend an Omaha recruiting dinner. So maybe he was a lot easier to get than you would think.
He was released by Bo Pelini last week, per USA Today, posted eight hours ago.
Wow, our recruiting staff is bannana’s. Bet we could even recruit Charlize’s momma to give “Pep” talks before games……
tee he
Nebraska has had some big time talent, as they do every year. Another big time pick up for the Kiff!!
It’s a great day: USC’s staff gets better and UCLA falls further off the map of the Milky Way.
Great pick-up a guy who can recruit is awesome, but someone who obviously can coach and recruit is even better. Gilmore has proven he can develop WRs with success at Wyoming, Purdue, and Nebraska. I think we hit a home run with this hire. Gilmore was a legacy from the pre-Pelini days, so that may explain him not being retained there after Pelini’s third year.
And if the NCAA should limit Kiffin’s recruiting travel as a result of the Tennessee fallout, this hire becomes all the more important….

I am not so concerned about Gilmore’s recruiting, I am concerned he is going to give receivers some good coaching, and… and… teach them how to block downfield which has been a trojan weakness for ever!
