Thanks, Garrett

USC interim baseball coach Frank Cruz is bucking the odds and off to a 3-4 start with a difficult schedule. Meanwhile, UC Irvine baseball coach Mike Gillespie is off to a 7-0 start, again flourishing for another season after former Mike Garrett fired him.

  1. SW, with all your contacts it’s shocking you say “Thanks Garrett”. You know full well Mike had a year left and “held up” MG to hire his son in law. Not to mention Mike had the John Robinson syndrom, i.e. no fire in the belly. But to Mike’s credit, he came back strong and is doing a fantastic job at UCI. But come on, you should know the truth.

  2. Chad Kreuter couldn’t manage a meat market, and Barney Fife has a better clue to run a game than Cruz. A decent coach would have won at least one of those games at Rice.

  3. Cruz is doing the best he can after Chad “Don’t take my hat” Kreuter ran the program into the ground. And Gillespie is only flourishing after John Savage built the program from the ground up and Dave Serrano enhanced it. Pretty easy to win after the foundation was put in place before you got there.

  4. What foundation was that? LMU hasn’t been to the CWS since Dave Snow took them there in the mid 1980s. Like I said, Savage built the UCI program the ground up got them in position to compete for conference titles, then Serrano stepped in and got to the World Series before he went to Fullerton.
