Must-See TV

Here’s great video of former USC coach Tim Floyd and former USC assistant Phil Johnson getting tossed from a game with a police officer escorting Floyd off. I haven’t seen Floyd this upset since the time he lost his nicotine gum at the Galen Center.

Tournament Talk?

USC might only be 15-12 overall but Trojans coach Kevin O’Neill will not rule out the chances for an NCAA Tournament bid with a strong finish.
“If we were to win out and go 19-12 going into the Pac-10 Tournament, who knows?” O’Neill said. “We’d have to play our way in to the NCAA Tournament. Whoever gets in (besides Arizona, Washington and UCLA) would have to string some wins together big time.”

Kiffin Penalties?

Could he be prevented from recruiting for eight months like Rick Neuheisel, when he was at Washington? Or get a three-game suspension like UConn coach Jim Calhoun?
Their violations were more serious, actually, than what today’s 26-page report details with Kiffin. So maybe he’s about as worried as that bobblehead in the picture a couple items below.

Behind The Scenes

USC coach Lane Kiffin is not going to say much regarding the NCAA charges against him, as his statement this morning illustrated. But I wrote a couple weeks ago that he told a close friend he believed the NCAA wanted to pin a “major violation,” against him.
That is why he already is lawyered up and ready to vigorously defend himself at the NCAA hearing. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s already considering his legal options after the NCAA announces its punishment.

Kiffin Allegations

Here’s the NCAA’s notice of allegations against Lane Kiffin that was received by USC on Tuesday and released today:

“The notice contains the following allegations of violation of NCAA rules against the football program:

By former members of the football coaching staff: impermissible telephone contact (16 total calls) with prospective student-athletes from Jan. 3-9, 2010.

By a former assistant football coach: allegations relating to impermissible contacts with prospective student-athletes.

By a former head football coach: failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the football program and failure to monitor the activities regarding compliance of several assistant coaches have also been made against a former head football coach, and permitting a football recruiting intern to make impermissible contact with high school staff during a recruiting visit.”

Morning Buzz

Here’s statements from USC coach Lane Kiffin and athletic director Pat Haden regarding the NCAA notice of allegations against Kiffin from his time at Tennessee.
“We have received from the NCAA a notice of allegations against Lane Kiffin
pertaining to his tenure as the head football coach at Tennessee,” Haden said. “The NCAA enforcement process provides for Tennessee and Lane to address those charges.
Until that process is completed, it would be unfair and premature for me or USC
to comment on this matter.
“However, I will say this: Since his return to USC last year as our head
football coach, Lane has been vigilant in making sure he and the football
program follow the NCAA’s rules and compete the right way. Lane has my support
as our head football coach.”
Said Kiffin: “We have received the notice of allegations. On the advice of my legal counsel, we cannot comment other than to say we look forward to working through the
process with the NCAA.”
