Nebraska 64, USC 61

A double OT thriller at the Galen Center tonight. The Trojans were handicapped by center Dewayne Dedmon being in foul trouble and scoring only four points. Maurice Jones scored 18.

  1. Scott —

We were also handicapped by the fact that Dedmon can’t play basketball. An NBA lottery pick! If Lane Kiffin said something that asinine, you would literally never, ever, stop mocking it.

Dedmon has the ugliest shot since … every one of the last 17 reclamation projects USC masqueraded as basketball players. Dedmon can dunk, I’ll give him that. But I see 10 guys at the gym every day who can also. Should we give them scholarships, too?

Don’t kid ourselves — if we went to Lincoln next week, we’d lose by at least 20. And Nebraska’s no good, either.

It’s too bad Pat Haden adopted some obscure women’s sport as his personal hobby. This program either needs to get better in a hurry, or we need to tear it down and start over.

I’d rather lose 20 games going in a new and better direction than slowly sinking, echoing in our cavernous arena double its appropriate size, combing Timbuktu Tech for players and pretending that O’Neil won’t either die of a heart attack on get fired for cause.

  2. Build it and they will come.

There are thousands of closet Trojan basketball fans, but this is L.A., and fans will only follow a winner.

And SC basketball has had good teams, but not consistently, so a solid fan base has never been established.
