Morning Buzz

Jim Mora Jr. as new UCLA coach. Thoughts? Is it Pete Carroll II or a continuation of the Neuheisel era?

  1. Like a chip off the old block: “What’s that? Ah — Bowl Game? Don’t talk about — Bowl Game?! You kidding me?! Bowl Game?! I just hope we can win a game! Another game!”

  2. Why so quiet Sanction U? Is it because you now see the writing on the wall and UCLA with its superior academics, athletic heritage and location is about open a whole new chapter in its ass kicking of Yesterday U? Mora, unlike the dimwit coaching your dimwit players, EARNED his way to head coaching positions in the NFL, not some payoff to his soup slurping daddy. Point is this, we got Hundley for the next 3 – 4 years and two of his coaches have coached Michael Vick, you know the Heisman winning NFL Pro-Bowler. Not to mention, Mora is a NFL caliber defensive coordinator, so nothing Lame “Playchart” Kitten has on that laminated cartoon sheet is going to overwhelm Mora or UCLA players.

I for one am glad we got our guy. The $UC owned media was floating rumors about Petersen and some other dudes, there was only one real target, and we got him.

Enjoy your team this year, it will never be this good for you guys again.

  3. Dynasty
Keep smoking the weed and drinking the koolaid. Your correct though Mora is a HUGE upgrade over at Baby Blue U. My prediction next year is that BBU will kick at least 2 field goals and the score will be 50-6. Keep hoping for the other great savior Hundley because I’m sure those coaches will show him how to roll a blunt and drown a few dogs. Another outstanding BBU move but don’t worry you guys have basketball, oops! Maybe you guys should just focus on the outstanding accademics that are slipping away with the rest of the UC system. Guerrero is the gift that keeps on giving.

  4. @UCLA Dynasty. Vick never won a Heisman. But I dig your sarcasm. You’re like the Steve Colbert of this board. Keep it coming!

  5. I think this is a good hire for UCLA. There are a lot of parallels between this hire and Pete Carroll’s–2-time failed NFL head coach, not the top choice for the job, no college HC experience, well liked by his players. Carroll had tough NFL jobs and I thought Mora got shafted bad by the Seahawks after just one year. Carroll replaced him there. He brings NFL cred and should be able to recruit well or at least a lot better than Neuheisal. Of course, he isn’t nearly as controversial as Neuheisal either. They could have done a lot worse.

I remember when the 49ers passed him up for Dennis Erickson for the HC job back in 2003. The next year, he was the HC for the Falcons. After a game where he beat the 49ers at Candlestick, all of the defensive players he coached met him at midfield to take pictures with him. They respected him and he is a passionate coach. It’ll be interesting to see what he does with this program–what kind of offense he installs, who his coaches are going to be.

  6. and we all remember what he, S head coa h, was able to a hieve with Vick. 5-11 baby!

I think it’s ironic that a UCLA fan would refer to USC as y
Yesterday U., given the fact that they haven’t been relevant in football in almost 15 years, their greatest athletic feat since 1996 is losing ugly in co secutive final fours and being part of a defunct university system that is on the verge of bankruptcy.

  7. I understand drawing parallels to Pete Carroll, but these all seem to end at both coaches lackluster W/L records prior to their first college HC jobs. Pete was a great head coach because he brought in top coaching talent around him (i.e. Chow, Kiffin, Sark, Norton, Orgeron, Davis, Polamalu).

All of the intangibles that are being used to describe Mora (energetic, emotional, loved by players) also apply to Neuheisel. Mora may be a good hire, but his success may largely depend on who he hires as his assistants. Early on, Neuheisel had great assistants in Chow and Walker, but not the talent level. Walker left after 1 year and Chow was smothered by Neuheisel. When ucla finally improved the talent level, they had no quality coaches on the staff.

And hiring a head coach was difficult for ucla, and now getting quality assistant coaches may prove to be even more difficult. Its better to hire an existing coach that has an established coaching staff, rather than someone like Mora that hasn’t been working with assistants for the past 2 years.

  8. How, one other MAJOR difference: SC was not turned down! The Chargers and Ore. St. would not let Turner or Reilly out of their contracts. Erickson had too much baggage for the SC administration. NOBODY turned SC down to take another job.

  9. Congrats to all the Bruin fans for finally having a coach. This is one important step to actually fielding an FBS football team. Again, congrats Bruins. Enjoy your day!

  10. Hey Scott, is that all you know, PC? Perhaps Mora is the right coach, perhaps he can bring them into the FBS now.
Perhaps he will do something different, like finally get them a little respect. I would love to have fucla have a good team, it would help the PAC12 and would be that much more enjoyable watching USC kick their ass again and again. These kids with their predictions of the fucla empire are hilarious, USC isn’t going to fall, but we do hope fucla improves.

  11. Mora? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA The guy is a dryball, and he sucks as a coach. Way to go Dan Guerrero, you’re a perfect example of what a minority hire acts like, an in over his head moron, same with MG and Hussein Obama.

  12. Why? Because he doesn’t like the joke of a president that we have? Obama is like the bRuins, clueless.

  13. If Obama’s clueless, what’s Rick Perry? Mitt? The Newt? Cain? Bachman? Palin? I could go on forever, baby.

  14. I am comparing the hiring process and the backgrounds of the two coaches and that’s all. In no way do I think that Mora will be anywhere as successful as Carroll. I still think the majority of the blue chippers from LA will come to SC and that Mora is going to have to pry that 1 or 2 and then deal with the SC leftovers. He has a huge challenge ahead of him and working for a school that doesn’t prioritize football is going to make his job very, very difficult.

  15. Whether or not Mora is a good coach, it doesn’t change the fact that ucla had to settle for the only guy willing to take the job. The “coaching search” was a series of rebukes from everyone they offered. Mora contacted them, ucla didn’t seek him out.

  16. I don’t know enough about Mora to be judgmental or to be excited about the hire. I trust the DG did plenty of consulting with the experts to finally settle on Mora…what would be exciting though, would be to hire his dad an assistant, that would be awesome, the Moras vs. the Kiffins, that would be effing awesome.

  17. FIGHTONTOVICTORY,

    LOL.

Our political views don’t match, but we can agree that I’m f***** for at least the next three years. “Mora the same”, for sure except it’s probably gonna be a little worse.

  18. Sorry TroBans, but Little Lame Playchart is over and done. Mora is the spark that is about to light a fire in the wealthy donors to once and for all crush your arrogance. Lamey is going to feel the heat and cheat again and then its death penalty time and Yesterday U will be as forgotten as a rotten egg fart in church. Everyone will remember it but only for the stink it put on everyone else. No one will miss your bloated, arrogant, Ambercrombie wearing d-bagfans (and that’s just the ladies.) Don’t be suprised if we start raising SIGNIFICANT funds for training facilities and a new stadium that rivals the wealthiest NFL teams. When you look at Bel Aire or Watts, which campus would a 5 star recruit choose anyway, not to mention our superior academics. Casey Wasserman may become the next Phil Knight or T-Bone Pickens of the college football world.

  19. Interesting how bruins are always looking for ways to rationalize their inferiority to SC.

And to think that 4-5 star athletes are attracted to college because of its academics is naive at best; kids that good in high school KNOW they are going pro, and don’t need no stinkin’ schooling except to improve their future pro standing.

  20. Dynasty old boy – you need to get off your feet, grab a glass of water and a Alleve and just chill. “Mora is the spark” to crush our arrogance? I didn’t know they let stupid people graduate from over there, or you are probably like our friend CerritosLob who went to Cerritos and adopted the Bruins right? Superior academics? When the UC system crumbles to the ground with no $, the Trojan faithful will be laughing their ass off!!

  21. WEB, justin and TroPete: you guys kill me!!
-“Dynasty is just kidding about Kiff and all that other stuff, right?”
-“yeah, he can’t be talking about us…we’re not like that, right?”
-“no way he’s serious, gotta be sarcasm”

HAWR-HAWR!!! as everyone knows, it is no much sugar sweeeeet when the butt of the joke doesn’t catch on that they being trashed!!!

this hire is an instant game changer!! forget the retreads and big-shot “i’m afraid of crowds” Petersen, we got Pete Carroll II!!!!

UCLA and the Cadre have risen again!!!! i feel so ALIVE!!!!!

  22. Bucket, you have more sense than that. Dynasty packed five or six jokes into his first post above. “The $UC owned media was floating rumors about Petersen and some other dudes, there was only one real target, and we got him.” Funny stuff. Clearly, there is some performance art happening here. I wish I could say the same about the guy who calls himself Nobs.

  23. BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAJAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! Did UCLA Fantasy just say Vick won the Heisman? Yeah, Patrick Cowan did too LMFAO. Fucla fans… LOL

  24. BearPuss, you’re the worst Bruin impersonator I’ve ever seen, my guess is you’re the same joker that uses about six ,different handles : SUC Owns Mono, moron, How Does and BoscoH…not fooling anyone, loser.

  25. I’m so over this site… What was once fun to talk shit with clueless Pandas, has turned into senseless, repetitive nonesense.

How many times can we hear buckshit, gayfantasy, and bruinslob say the same things… Over and over and over again…

    Yawn.

  26. BruinRob,

You saying you actually like this hire? Gold’s blog is a mixed bag, but no one can really say why they like the guy, just that he’s “tough”. I don’t happen to agree. If you like him as a coach, with NO RECRUITING EXPERIENCE, I’d love to hear why.
