Equal Justice?

The Columbus Dispatch reports Ohio State received a one-year bowl ban from the NCAA and lost nine scholarships over three years. How do you think that measures up against USC’s sanctions?

  1. Staff/Head coach knows about illegal benefits: 1 yr bowl ban 9 schollies taken… as opposed to staff NOT Knowing and it being ONE player compared to several…. yeeeeeeah. Fuck the NCAA. and ucla for not being good enough to get players that would want benefits. Ha.
    fight on!

  2. Just shows what a joke the SC sanctions were. If OSU was in the running for a national championship every year they would have been punished more. Because the head coach new and the school then pushed to allow the players in a bowl game the sanctions should have been heavier than SC. I have never been madder than right now.

  3. They actually lost 4 additional scholarships per year over the next 3 years in addition to the 5 scholarships they voluntarily gave up, for a total loss of 16 scholarships lost over 3 years.

  4. Let’s see here:

On one hand we have one guy going rogue with his family staying in an overpriced suburban home 131 miles from campus and him driving a 10 year old Chevy.

On the other hand, we have about 30 players involved with actively trading memorabilia for tattoos and drugs in the same city as the university… we have the head football coach holding full knowledge of some of the goings on… and we have a massive coverup.

One case gets a two year bowl ban and 30 scholarships ripped away while the other gets a one year ban and nine scholarships ripped. Doesn’t seem very fair.

I will say however, that tOSU actually got more of a punishment than I thought they would. It’s still disproportionate, but the NCAA didn’t let the Buckeyes off scott-free.

  5. Enough is enough. Time to go after the NCAA. What’s the downside? Bowl bans are done, so that won’t be in the background while SC sues the NCAA.

  6. If there ever was a time for USC to go to court on their sanctions NOW IS THE TIME! I think they could get the scholarship reduction reduced if they called the NCAA’s bluff. Paul Dees is a big player in this and the NCAA’s decision was tainted.

  7. Am I the only USC partisan who feels somewhat queasy about actively rooting for the destruction of other football programs?

I take second place to no one in despising what the NCAA did to us, in light of what they didn’t prove, merely alleged or flat out got wrong. But this is the ruling body’s grotesque legacy: USC fans are now supposed to rejoice at whatever happens to Ohio State, Miami, South Carolina and others. We got damaged, so now we hope everyone else does, too.

It doesn’t feel great, but it’s a measure of how much was taken away and the deep wounds we feel about being targeted and punished unfairly.

Like a few here, I’m somewhat surprised OSU got the bowl ban at all … and I wouldn’t rule out an appeal (even a successful one!) from the Buckeyes. But that finally said, the NCAA needs to either call off the dogs like the ones who got after USC … or start smashing the rulebreakers and clean up the sport.

I’m all for the latter … but would the FBS be able to fill up all 35 bowls if they did?

  8. DT-89 – STFU. We got jobbed by the NCAA because everybody outside of SC is a bunch of envious motherf’ing dick ridahz. Don’t try to tell the congregation to calm down and accept fate. That is complete garbage. Right now, we need to root for the downfall of other programs (Whoregon next) because no one, I repeat, not one other program could weather the sanctions that SC has with as much success as SC will.

Ohio State, may they burn down….

  9. Monopoly: I guess I rest my case?

Conquest — a distinction worth thinking about. I only meant to express the degree the NCAA has imposed itself on our sporting lives and even in a terrific year, we find ourselves angry over what might have been. It’s like being sanctioned twice.

Here’s hoping the outrageous penalties on ‘SC will lead to even somewhat justified sanctions on the schools that really deserve it.

  10. DT-89………I’d rather have SC’s scholarship restrictions reduced then have other schools penalized more. But the NCAA is never going to reduce the penalties on SC. Let’s see what happens with Miami.

  11. There should be a bowl ban for the actual crime (free benefits) and a one year bowl ban for the attempted coverup.

  12. The difference in the severiy of punishment is that The Sweater Vest fell on his sword and resigned while Pete ignored the NCAA.

  13. marvgoux…there was no evidence provided by the NCAA that Carroll knew anything. Carroll could come back to coach in college today with no restrictions.
Gnossos……..great point. It should at least be seniors who don’t have the ability to play in a bowl during their senior year. What a joke. This penalty wasn’t about the poor juniors or seniors at SC, but another way to penalize SC. No player who was a starter or major contributor transferred. It was just a “get out of jail card” for the disgruntled bench-warmers. This really hurt last year with the depth.

  14. I’m shocked, shocked I say, that the scumbags at the NCAA did what they did to OSU. I fully expected the Buckeyes to skate without any real harm done. OSU got over but I really thought they’d avoid the post season/bowl ban as well. After all is said and done, the NCAA is probably the worst example of American bureaucracy run amuck ever. Congress could take lessons from the NCAA.

  15. For those of you interested, here’s Mark Emmert’s email address: memmert@ncaa.org Maybe he’ll respond to our inquiries as to how the OSU penalties were determined. The NCAA, what a joke.

  16. oh, wolfman, i love you man, but sometimes you go too far!!! what a kind of sadistic maniac goes to the zoo and tosses firecrackers into the monkey house?

fortunately, group therapy is recognized as one of the best ways to facilitate reality confrontation, so here goes!!!

myth 1) comparing OSU players trading tattoos for jerseys to Bush taking HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS in illegal cash, housing, furniture, appliances, travel, clothing and a car!!! and most of all Reggie went pro–the money was from an agent!!!

myth 2) “the piece of junk car”: i used to drive a 10 yr old chevy and no one put us on the cover of a custom car magazine!!

myth 3) “the coaches didn’t know” the NCAA saw photos, phone records and witness testimony showing McNair partied with Reggie and the New Era Boyz. and then, McNair’s “star witness” was caught lying to the NCAA!

oh how i wish Southern Cal would sue the NCAA!!! the Cadre has been champing at the bit for years to file our amicus briefs. i say lets litigate and let the chimps fall where they may!!!!

  17. Bucket….no one here gives a shit about your opinion…..who let you out from under that rock….idiot

  18. I hate to say this but, both Ohio State and USC got what we deserved, quite frankly. Anyone who believes that Pete Carroll didn’t know what was going on, is completely clueless. Is it coincidense he bolted on us days before the NCAA announced they were ready to rule on the case? C’mon people, let’s stop drinking that denial kool-aid and get real. We have a national championship to battle for next year, can the Buckeyes say that? no, they can’t.
    Fight On.

  19. Hey Bruinslob, what does the number 50 mean?
    A.) Your IQ
    B.) Your waist size
C.) The Number of points SC beat down your sorry ass Bruins.
    D.) All of the above.

Merry Xmas jerkoff to you and the rest of your FUCLA clowns.

  20. OSU’s sanctions are manageable. But Tressel got hammered.

What’s the status of McNair’s suit against the NCAA? All they had on him was one photograph and a phone call he doesn’t remember taking because the NCAA got the year of the phone call wrong.

  21. I kind of agree with DT-89. I was on the boards two years ago trying to make the case to homers at other schools that we all know if Yahoo or ESPN had investigative reporters sent to almost any D-1 football program, they’d be able to dig some dirt somewhere. 85 players on any given team, a certain chunk of them destined for the NFL, the relative independence of college? It’s easy pickings.

Most of us would agree that SC’s punishment was totally over-the-top, and that part of this was because the fight was so public, with Yahoo leading the way as public provocateur, and with Garret’s public arrogance. But the problem is the structure of the NCAA, not necessarily the individual schools. The only thing good about the OSU case is that it adds to list of fake moral BS being thrown at big time college programs. It’s a farce, and USC was a scapegoat. Once the hammer starts coming down on the SEC, for better or for worse, things will probably change. For now, we should be saying to those in line (OSU, Miami, North Carolina, etc) “See, I told you it was bullshit.”

  22. bucket, since you got your handle from neuheisel’s infamous and very oddly coined “passion bucket” comment – will you also be fired(from this site) after the season’s over?

  23. I AM PISSED AND I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE TO MY FELLOW TROJAN FANS BUT JEEZIS CHRIST THIS IS RIDICULOUS! THEY DO ALL THAT CRAP WITH OBVIOUS LOIC AND THEY LOSE WHAT 2 SCHOLIES A YEAR? AND WE GET NEAR THE DEATH PENALTY?? NO APOLOGIES I AM DRINKING RIGHT NOW THIS PISSES ME OFF I AM SO SICK OF THE NCAA AND THE EAST COAST BIAS

  24. Here’s the deal: Garrett screwed up (I’m a MG guy) and the NCAA decided to F^ck us and did. Yes, they are bull$h!t, but we did it to ourselves by not cooperating. All the other schools are benefiting by our mistake. BUT neither Max nor Pat are willing to “man up” ans FIGHT the NCAA. It’s more important to the Greek to hit his 6B fundraising goal than fight for SC Football. Pat & Job Hopper are more concerned with kiss@$$ reputations and a paycheck!
USC will do NOTHING! Live with it. BTW, Garrett would be in court (ok, without his law lic.), but at least he’d be fighting for SC!

  25. Whoa! Jackie! Wuz up? Why yu be so angry wit me, girl?j I haven’t even said a word on this blog! I’m just letting the boys and you girl vent your frustration, and u come at me like dat? ‘mon girl!! Take some Pamprin or some Misplaced, or some dark chocolate, and if that don’t work go sit on a giant cucumber jammed up your ass, you girlie girl.

  26. A law suit is out of the question, it would take longer to go to trial, way after the sanctions are over.

Garrett did us in by doing nothing during the time NCAA was investigating the Bush thing. Courts always levy harsher penaltys on defendants that show no remorse for their actions. For some reason he penalized the basketball team and stood around a did nothing to the football program.

I am with Haden, move on and make the best of what is dealt us. He knows that a law suit would have to allege we were penalized without due process. The NCAA heard our side of the violation twice, a court would probably agree that the hearings constitute due process. Yes the punishment handed to us is over the top, unfortunately we are stuck with the penaltys because of the lack of action by Garrett.

  27. 51, you are full of $h!t. I’m sure Garrett didn’t give you the time of day and you are a cheap SOB. Oh sure, you’re a little C&G cheapskate. FU

  28. Fellas, we dug our own grave, the problem is we had no one to learn from, had we done something to self impose our own sanctions against our Football program instead of our defenseless basketball team, we would not be having this conversation. The arrogance of our AD and PC sure didn’t help either.

The 67 page report of the NCAA infractions committe showed in fact that the school did know about Bush’s car…phone records, indiate McNair had contact with the agents…photos of McNair and the agents proves at least one of the coaches knew about Bush and agents dealings.

To compare getting a tattoo in exchange of a jersey, or selling your gloves, or your uniform pants in exchange for money for food, or accepting money to sign an autographed football, again small change for food – to Reggie Bush, getting $1500 in cash almost every week to have fun with, driving a “registered” pimped out car to school, and the school never reporting it to the NCAA is completely unacceptable.

Those agents roamed the sidelines during practices and roamed the lockerooms as well after practices and games, and you mean to tell me, the coaching staff or “compliance” just issued these passes without questioning them? If they allowed all these transgressions, it’s called “lack of institutional control” which is exactly what did USC in.

Some of you will come strong at me with your insults, but some of you will accept that this is true, and that the punishment handed out, well, I admit it was a little harsh, even I will admit but remember, USC could have been a little more humble during the process by imposing their own penalties but the didn’t.

  30. Again, you have your f’ing facts wrong, BruinRob. The 67-page report was filled with errors of fact (phone records). In “Tarnished Heisman,” which I know you read, why don’t you re-read p.223-4 where the attorneys for the wannabe agents talk about whether McNair knew about Bush’s dealings? The school knew about the car–they didn’t know that it was financed by an agent and for that, they are guilty. Man, you and that photo. Someone snaps one picture with somebody else and you just assume they know each other’s life story. I’m surprised you didn’t bring out the “Michaels had a recorded phone conversation with Carroll and it was impermissible blah, blah, blah” lie that you created. You told me you would cite that source but you still haven’t done so.

  31. @TrojanPete, you’re right about the source, I’m sure you heard about it too when it was reported. I know if I heard something like that about UCLA, I would remember it also, my research skills are not very good, sorry.

As for what is stated in the book? what year was the book written?? and was the NCAA report prepared?? you are conveniently overlooking those facts.

USC appealed, and they lost the appeal, facts are facts Pete, Reggie Bush had a car, that was paid by the agents – FACT. The car was registered with the school, so the school knew, – FACT. McNair had contact with the agents, the phone records provided by Michaels and Lake prove that – FACT.

McNair had a photo with the agents – FACT. If the photo was “photo-shopped” why didn’t McNair dispute it? Why hasn’t McNair filed a law suit for defamation of character? or it the whole report was filled with lies, why won’t USC sue the NCAA as many of your fellow trojans have asked? is it perhaps because USC knows the truth more than the posters here do?? my guess is YES they know more than you do.

The truth is, we all love our teams/schools and it’s hard to accept things when they go against us, I would be in denial too, man…it’s all good.

  32. You either misunderstand or choose to ignore what I am writing. Who cares when the book was written? The book takes first hand accounts from the people involved. As you say, facts are facts. The NCAA report was filled with errors. If McNair is asked a question about a phone conversation that occurred in January 2005 and he says he doesn’t remember and it turns out that the conversation actually happened in 2006, is he lying? No. So he has phone contact with Michaels and he is in a photo with him? Where’s the proof that he knew of the business dealings? Where is it written in the NCAA report? One of the agents’ attorneys denies that McNair knew while the other said he didn’t know.

You of all people shouldn’t talk about facts and truth given how much you lie. Worst of all, you made up a story of a wife that was killed by a drunk driver but you made the mistake of changing her death date. That is really crass.

  33. And by the way, USC was not allowed to appeal the decision. It was only allowed to appeal the penalties. This change in method by the NCAA was something the NCAA instituted through a procedural move, bypassing any vote from members. And they did this because too many penalties were being overturned. That’s pretty crappy due process if you ask me.

  34. Trojan Pete…I made the mistake of changing her death date?? please explain…because I really don’t know what you’re talking about.

  35. You have stated that she died 20 years ago. Last year, you stated she died 16 years ago. Last month it was 19 years ago. So it’s not a mistake in approximation. I know several widows–they don’t get that stuff wrong.

  36. It was 19 years, after Thanksgiving it became 20…as for 16? Easy mistake, typo perhaps? The 6 key is right next to the 9 key….I don’t even know why I’m having to explain this, Pete. Good Night.

  37. But in July, 2010, it would have been 18. I knew you’d make the fat finger excuse with the 6 & 9 but the 8 kills it. The reason why I ask for an explanation is because you make up a story that never happened to gain sympathy…from people online? And you keep tabs on one of the posters here by checking his facebook site and posting his personal information? Man, you’ve got problems–serious, serious problems.

  38. Pete, it was very easy for SlobDusky to make the 16 & 20 year mistake. You see, his dog died 16 years ago and the old lady was 20 years ago. Both looked a lot a like and it was hard to tell the difference. Both died of boredom…well, that’s obvious.
