Where Will They Go?

The buzz is the Armstead brothers favor going to Notre Dame. Hopefully this is true because it will increase scrutiny on the fact USC did not clear Armond Armstead to play next season. He joins Jarvis Jones and Frankie Telfort. But Jones did not go to an archrival.
In the past coaches like Pete Carroll (see Rocky Hinds) played hardball on transferring to rivals. That no longer appears to be the case with Amir Carlisle.
But I digress. The point is some transparency on this medically unable to play issue needs to occur.

  1. There must be some serious bad blood here. Any”Trojan” transferring to ND is basically giving USC the middle finger. I’ll withhold judgement on Armond until when/if details of story are disclosed. The media should be banging on the administration much harder, this is a big story.

  2. I guess my brain challenge friend Scott has not heard of medical privacy laws. The Armsteads could hold a press conference at anytime and reveal any medical records they choose. USC can’t release ANYTHING. As usual Scott you don’t understand the working parts of the system. If you think ND is going to clear Armstead then your dumber then I’ve ever dreamed. ND does not play in the SEC. Especially with that little problem with liftgate.

Armstead will end up making a pay day in the SEC. My guess is Auburn.

  3. sorry fella’s…Attending Notre Dame is way more PRESTIGIOUS than $cum. Where do I begin? Only INEBRIATED KOOL AID drinking, LIMBO U diehards would dare disagree. Your school is located in an area that is less than desirable. Your admissions “STANDARDS”are a complete Joke and an embarrassment to most Universities. The list of NCAA infractions compiled by southern cal allows schools like Miami, SMU, and Ohio St. to slip under the NCAA RADAR.
Do you really believe, for one moment, manti Te’o (or ANY other athlete OR STUDENT) ever looked back on his choice of ATTENDING NOTRE DAME with the slightest bit of regret and wish they’d have attended $CUMBAG U instead?
IF…..any of you drunk FRAT BOY’s had the TIME and MONEY to visit Notre Dame, you’d get it.
    fite on though…

  4. Name ONE ahole that transfered that made a HUGE impact on the next program: NONE. And don’t try to bring up Brooker, he didn’t do $H!T.

  5. Uh… spedjones… Georgia played in the weaker division of the SEC and ended up losing a bowl game to Michigan State. He wasn’t exactly All-World or anything.
But hey, whatever it takes to take the attention OFF of U.C.L.A. football… I guess I understand. Lol.

  6. I know a source that is very close to the family of Manti Teo, and Manti was actually going to go to USC but changed his mind only after the USC people took him to night clubs, and were trying to get him drunk on Manti’s official visit to USC – when Manti Teo doesn’t drink, smoke, or any of that stuff.

Manti’s family was outraged when they found out what they were trying to do to him, and word spread out within the Hawaiian community that is a very close with each other…that is the reason why USC has not been very successful in recruiting Hawaiian players, most schools don’t even let the SC recruiters even talk to the players.

  7. Rob your information (aka made-up stories) are a bore. Teo got in a fight in LA which caused the decision. Moron.

  8. Rob,

Te’o got into a huge fight out here. As for why USC doesn’t have very much success recruiting Hawaiian players…how many good ones are there? There really aren’t many good ones that come from that state. So if there aren’t a lot of prospects, why would SC recruiters even care? If Te’o doesn’t drink, smoke, etc., then good for him. I don’t do those things either. Then again, I don’t pop off before a game and call out Lane Kiffin and then get beaten in a lackluster performance. The Mormons I know don’t respect Te’o. They think he’s a fake just trying to please his mother and they certainly don’t like the fact that he has decided to skip his mission. I think he’s a very good player–one that would’ve definitely helped SC. But oh well.

  9. @USC owns crap – Is it possible Manti Teo got into a fight here on his official visit because of what he perceived pressure to do something he did not feel comfortable with? My source is knows Manti’s family, and many of the families in Hawaii, and this source happens to be a very close friend of Norm Chow. Trying to get Manti to do party was USC’s mistake in not having the right person/people escort him on his official vist.

@TrojanPete, USC recruited many players from Hawaii before, but they shot themselves on the foot when they screwed it all up with Manti Teo. I’m not talking out of my ass.

  10. Hey guys,

Long time reader, 1st time poster. Let me just say that I enjoy all the insights, even the banter from Bruin lurkers.

For those that don’t know, there are HIPPA laws that keep medical info private & will never allow USC to release the info. That’s why you may recall Coach Kiffin saying last year that it was up to Armstead’s parents to decide if they want to talk about it in detail, but instead the Armsteads have chosen to just say that they don’t like the way the university has handled it, because they know the truth will hurt his chances of proceeding with a pro career.

While I do know what he was diagnosed with, I can’t divulge it either, so all I can say is that I agree with the USC physicians. I can assure you that USC physician that won’t clear him is THE world expert in this field and a HUGE SC football fan as well. Any outside physician that clears him is not aware of the risks.

For what it’s worth, trust SC to protect the kids, not the scoreboard. Any one that lets these kids play with potential risk of high morbidity or mortality, is not looking at the greater good.

If there’s a reason we can’t clear them, then let’s just wish them well & allow them to move on as well if that is their decision.

    Fight On!

  11. Thanks for the response SPEDJONES you coward. Lol, whatever, bRuin. Enjoy your sorry football program and whatever recruits make the mistake of going there to die a slow football career death haha.
    Fight on!

  12. I don’t know Armstead’s issue. But as many have already mentioned, there are privacy laws that prevent the school from divulging the diagnosis/prognosis. I do know this–he was in the hospital for 4 days and the condition was very serious. Many have said it was related to a blood clot. Jarvis Jones’ problem was with his neck. He found doctors that would clear him. Frankie Telfort has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Folks, these are not simple orthopedic issues. These are serious, life threatening problems. I don’t know why Wolf seems to hold Telfort’s situation against USC. No physician will ever clear Telfort to play. He’s lucky USC’s doctors screened for this during his physical and told him about it before it was too late. I hope Jones’ neck has completely healed. Maybe the extra year off helped. But who’s to say that some doctor at the NFL combine next year won’t agree with the USC doctors and find that he still has a problem? I hope he doesn’t but a lot of people have had medical problems discovered during the combine that other doctors have missed along the way.

Some, like Wolf, have suggested that USC should just get Armstead to sign a waiver that would absolve USC of any liability if he is injured as a result of his medical issue. If Armstead were to get injured, does anyone really think that a waiver is going to prevent his family from suing USC? Whatever the issue–legal or medical–I can’t blame USC. Our university is not going to put football above all–not all schools can say that.

  13. Belmont Trojan must be new. That post was factually correct, didn’t involve any threats or slurs and was reasonable. I’d rather we cut kids loose or medically bench them than ever risk a lifelong injury or death in the name of SC football.

  14. scott

ND could end up with the #1 class in the nation..they have some of the top players coming in. What gives?

is B Kelly really that great of a recruiter?

    just the notre dame “mystique”?

  15. oh and don’t worry, ND will find a way to clear any problem Armond has..it’s a scumbag school.

how do you think holtz won so much? by keeping up those supposed “notre dame standards”?

  16. Wolf, how about some investigative journalism on this issue. I know that they can’t discuss a player’s medical condition, but what is it about SC that causes this to happen way more than anywhere else? I’ tired of speculation.

  17. SlobDusky, ask Teo what his record is against USC. Bet he wishes he’d have gone here, if we’d have taken him. I’m not talking about guys that didn’t sign moron, I’m talking about transfers. Name one!

  18. THIS is the mentality of UCLA football fans:

spedjones said: Embarrasing as in playing in the first ever PAC 12 championship game or getting hit with the hardest cheating sanctions since SMU? Hmmmm.
    January 17, 2012 3:34 PM

UCLA fans on this blog are actually proud of their appearance in the Pac-12 championship game thanks to USC being on probation (USC 10-2 UCLA 6-8 and a 50-0 shellacking). The UCLA fans that I know on a personal level are embarrassed. UCLA is a joke. Like these message board geeks. LOL

  19. SC wouldn’t give a scholie to Teo’s ass pirate bone smuggling buddy, so he went to Pedophile U instead, seems logical.

  20. I’m surprised Notre Dame is considering taking Armstead after USC wouldn’t clear him medically, given the liability they took on after the fiasco with the student dying recently while taking video of the team practicing. One would think that Notre Dame would be ultra-careful about taking on more liability. It’s not like USC’s doctors didn’t clear him because they want USC to do poorly or they had some beef with Armond. If they really saw something they weren’t comfortable taking the chance sending onto the field, chances are that another school’s doctors would see the same thing, and then someone has to make a decision about whether the potential benefit of having a great player on the field is worth the risk of losing the player to further injury or worse, and then having to deal with a lawsuit from the family for letting him play. I’m glad for Jarvis Jones that he’s done so well at Georgia, but I’m happier that whatever problem USC doctors saw hasn’t resulted in something serious happening on or off the field. Len Bias? Hank Gathers? Damien Nash? Thomas Herrion? We had a 10-2 record last year without endangering any players’ lives. Shouldn’t that be enough for us as fans?

  21. LOL. OTRB, you are quick to point to UCLA’s loss but completely ignore that your school was just hit with the hardest sanctions since SMU. Most fans would think that’s about the most embarrassing thing going, but not Trogans! CHEAT ON!

  22. LBC – USC played in the weaker Pac 12 South, had a very easy OOC schedule etc. How many first-team all-americans did it have? And the best part is that Jones is coming back next year for UGA. Could have been at SC, but ain’t. That’s gotta sting.

The question was name a transfer who made an impact. I did. You lose.

  23. Hey tai/mex, I just left Southbend, the home of Notre Dame, walked into 5-guys with USC sweatshirt on and people about pissed themselves. Anyone with HALF (that leaves out ALL fuclans) a brain would never stay through the endless winter. 5 degrees? Ya right. What they have is a big picture of Jesus, gates with coaches names on them (which USC owns)and lots and lots of snow.

  24. What on earth does Wolf mean by “transparency” on this issue, anyway? Medical exams conducted in front of the press, like a weigh-in before a boxing match?

Unless someone can come up with a reason why USC’s own doctors will not clear players WHO WOULD HELP THE TEAM, then what kind of shady motive could anyone at USC have?

If Wolf is implying that the doctors are incompetent, should we take Wolf’s insinuation seriously? That question answers itself.

  25. what Wolf is asking is how can guys not be cleared at SC but then cleared at other schools. It’s a valid question. You clowns are talking Natty next year – wouldn’t it be nice to have Jarvis Jones still?

  26. @Belmont…..
Thank You for that great post. I am in total agreement with you in support of the USC doctors and their patient relationships being more important than the scoreboard.
    Fight On

  27. spedjones – perhaps the USC doctors are more cautious than the docs at other schools. Same reason most schools wouldn’t let a student go up on a scissor lift in gale force winds. Brian Kelly didn’t seem to mind.

Also, USC may have played in the weaker Pac-12 South, but we played the toughest schedule of the bunch, drawing Oregon and Washington. ucla got a chance to play OSU in a terribly down year, and WSU – who just canned their coach. You guys are lucky you’re playing the Cougs this year. Once Mike Leach gets his guys humming on offense, they will be tough to beat.

  28. sureshot, the question was simply “name a transfer who’s made a material impact”. I said Jones, an all-american this year who will be returning to his UGA team for his senior year. That’s it. Don’t tell me the Trogans wouldn’t like to have him back. If he’s well enough to play at UGA and earn AA honors, why not SC?

  29. Lol who cares about Jarvis jones he wouldnt be starting at USC anyway… Not at linebacker anyway he dosent fit our system smart guy. I’m happy the kid went somewhere he can make a positive impact on a school and for his future. But a 255 pound outside backer is not what USC needs if you actualy got off your key board and watched football you would know that.

  30. Jarvis Jones, Manti Te’o, (and Alshon Jeffrey) are awesome, stop hating just because they got away. Broderick Green played well for Arkansas too after he left USC.

  32. “”name a transfer who’s made a material impact”….Not a USC Connection but the best I can recall was Troy Aikman getting away from running the Wishbone at Oklahoma.

  33. Matt Moore and J.P. Losman getting away from running anything at ucla, and having pro careers.
