Two-Sport Addition

USC basketball coach Kevin O’Neill will be happy that offensive tackle Zach Banner will play football and basketball next season. Banner’s commitment means USC will now try to close by getting Kyle Murphy and/or Andrus Peat.

  1. banner’s a bb player too? who’s considered better of the two 2-sport behemoths in hoops on the west coast; banner or armstead? this may be the one time i wouldn’t mind a bruin response – an informed without invective would be preferable.

  2. According to ESPN, Armstead rated slightly higher. Not sure about rankings…our center Joshua Smith was a McDonald’s All-American. We thought it meant he was a great player…but it seems that he was “literally” an All-American in a McDonald’s.

  3. Can Banner’s scholarship be a basketball scholarship to free up one for football, or is that a “no-no”?

  4. USC Homley…..great question, but I’m thinking that this is wishful thinking when dealing with the NCAA.

  5. Conquest, I see what you are saying, but two-sport players do not use a scholarship for each sport, right? So who chooses which sport? Why wouldn’t the entity that provides the scholarship (the university) be allowed to choose? I honestly cannot imagine a 6’8, 310-lb freshman (who will surely put on more size as he gets in the USC weightroom) on the basketball court, so it makes me wonder if this is just another strategy to free up a scholarship. I still hear about Woods playing basketball next year, which makes little sense for USC or for him, unless it might free up a scholarship.

  6. Holmes…….no way Woods plays basketball next year. He’ll be preparing for the NFL draft.

  7. Banner is a great Kid. If you watched him play in Army AA game he was getting blown by quicker ends like his feet were nailed to the turf. He better get moved inside.

  8. InCarlos, he’s a 5 star recruit chose to play in that game over a million other tackles… He’ll be fine. People didn’t choose him based on his size SC will make him a first round draft pick like just about every other tackle who comes in

  9. you cannot use a BB scholie for FB. and you can’t use any other sport(other than a FB) scholie for BB. that’s the pecking order of the revenue producing sports.

if there’s any other pecking order with other sports it would probably include baseball – but that i’m not sure of.

  10. BlueBag45, just like Seantrell Henderson I guess. That dude is a joke and a 5 star recruit, which we all know is meaningless. If the guy can’t move he won’t be able to block. I guess the Khalil brothers would be working the day shift at Del Taco if it weren’t for Eddy O, your a tool dude. VIVA Sud America!!!

  11. If he has the feet to play basketball then put him on the team. I have no problem at all with 2 sport athletes. Good for them.

This is a great recruit, the future is looking up my Trojan brothers

  12. @incalos: You know defenses have a advantage with only a week of practice in these games. The coaches, and recruiting service scouts picked Banner as one of the top players in the all-star camp. Orgeron coaches defensive linemen. Hail UCLAP! Just another hater, trashing a kid before he plays a down. Seems it was the same tune with Henderson, last year.
