Morning Buzz

Lane Kiffin said he wanted to start spring practice in early March because the Trojans did not play in a bowl game. But with three vacancies on the coaching staff, he might regret it now.
He can get by without a full staff in spring but those practices help the new coaches become familiar with what he wants and the team as well. That is why I won’t be surprised if Nick Holt emerges as a linebackers’ candidate. He already knows the system.
At wide receiver, Kiffin told Keary Colbert a year ago he did not consider him a candidate for the position. So he would have to do a 180-degree turn there.

  1. I imagine that Kiffin’s “regret” is more the fact of the change, rather than its timing.

It would be poor management to allow the timing of spring practice to provoke a sub-optimal and premature coaching hire or hires. USC owes its players the best coaching that money can buy. Fortunately, that dovetails nicely with the goal of winning.

Hopefully, Kiffin will hire three great teachers, even if he must delay spring practice, or go without those position coaches during spring practice. If college coaches are anything like college professors, one great one is worth three fairly good ones.

  2. Are you sure CLK said that? If so, you should keep those comments to yourself because of the players are campaigning for him. CLK might change his mind about KC. Also, wasn’t KC more interested in the NFL as a player about a year ago as you state?

  3. If Kiffin can’t find the best fills for the positions right now, I wonder if it makes sense to hire as temporary spring practice consultants a couple of ex-Trojans or other local ex-NFL players during? If one has played a position very well, one ought to be able to teach something about it to an underclassman.

And you never know–maybe a Keary Colbert or a Claiborne shows enough promise and interest to be asked to stay on.

Admittedly, it’s not ideal, but sometimes one must improvise, and hiring a consultant is from the realm of the possible.

  4. What’s the big deal? It’s not like Kiffin is working alone in the search. Ever heard of “administrative support”? There’s only Haden, McKay and their teams working on the searches.

Please. I wish I had such luxuries in my work. What a trivial problem to be facing. Just hire the bastards and move on. Case closed.

  5. Why doesn’t Kiffin look at SEC position coaches? Well maybe it wouldn’t make any difference since Monte would tell them what & how to do their job…

  6. “you should keep those comments to yourself”???? Do you realize Wolf is a reporter for the Daily News, not the Fat Booster?

  7. I think Nick Holt would be a very good to great hire.
    1. he is probably pretty humble after his last game.
    2. he is out of work and looking for a job so he would be thankful.
    3. he knows the system and he knows what would be expected of him.
    4. he has a great cadre of LBs that will be at SC for at least two more years so he can really work on them and the game plan needed for them to excel.
    5. he is available and he fits the program well so that LK can spend time on getting a DB and receiver coach.
Lane…push the button on this one get him into camp and ready to go for spring practice.

  8. @sdbob

Nick Holt is the calibre coach we deserve at ‘SC.

He was one of Carroll’s worst hires — with the exception of maybe Jeremy Bates.
