The Small Tree, Part II

USC coach Lane Kiffin hired Scottie Hazelton of North Dakota State to be the Trojans’ linebackers coach. This definitely reeks of a Pete Carroll recommendation because Hazelton worked Seahawks defensive coordinator Casey Bradley. Which folIlows the theory I mentioned yesterday about Kiffin having few connections outside of Carroll and his father, Monte Kiffin.
Hazelton also coached at Michigan Tech, Missouri Southern State and St. Olaf College. How many of those schools have you heard of before?

  1. “Recommended by Pete Carroll or Monte Kiffin” isn’t exactly something that looks bad on a resume, Scott. Not like “managed discipline for Chip Kelly or Joe Paterno.”

  2. Georgia Southern had more success against Alabama’s defense last year than they did against North Daokta State……just saying

  3. Not sure what Scott’s point is. Most coaches build their connnections through places they’ve worked and people they know. If Lane Kiffin has the ear of people like Pete Carroll and his dad, then he’s better connected than the vast mojority of coaches.

  4. What’s this guys deal anyway? “Reeks”?, why does a recommendation (IF that is what is really was) make it a bad thing? I don’t get this guys negativity w/ Kiffin….

  5. Scotty is just upset that his mentor only reccomends that he give up journalism and return to his real calling of flipping burgers

  6. Wolf could have just said it was a “no-name” hire recommended by Carroll, and left it at that. Nope. He’d rather take a swipe at Carroll, Kiffin and the new DB coach.

Wolf, taking the low road, as usual.

  7. Scotty, each of those schools has more stature than the “highly touted” L.A. Daily News. Who the F ever heard of them outside of Pomona?
