Swim Matters

USC is currently eighth at the men’s swimming and diving championships. A top 10 finish is nice especially on the heels of the women’s good finish (third) last week.
But it also raises a valid question: Why can’t the men do as well or better than the women? The reason it deserves scrutiny is because UCLA does not have a men’s swim program. Can you imagine how many other sports at USC wish they did not compete against UCLA for star recruits in Southern California?
The closest quality swim programs are California and Stanford. Lane Kiffin probably wouldn’t mind his nearest rival being in the Bay Area.

  1. You cant compare swimming to football! The PAC 12 is the most competitive conference in mens swimming with Cal, Arizona, Stanford and USC conistently finishing in the top 10 at NCAAs. Dave Salo has done a remarkable job and USC sends multiple swimmers to the Olympics. Plus, USC does not have any male divers this year which adds to the overall points. They are on there way to a top 3 finish, would not be suprised if within the next two years.

  2. How many swimmers are on a college swim/dive team? Men only get 9.9 scholarships and women 8.1. Got to think being an expensive private school impacts this like it does in baseball.

  3. What’s the scholarship situation for men’s swimming and diving? The fact that the men’s team has no divers leads me to think the cap on swimming/diving scholarships is too low.

Public schools, with their lower tuition, can do a lot more with partial/split scholarships. And Stanford can afford to give free tuition to all students from households with annual incomes below $75,000.

Other private schools face an uphill battle. Look at baseball. What’s a private school supposed to do in a sport that requires 9 players on the field, plus relief pitchers, yet scholarships are capped at 11 or 12.

  4. Jon maybe we can ask Stetson, Miami, TCU, Rice and Baylor how they do it…they are all ranked teams in NCAA Division I baseball. Sorry but excuses are for the gutties. And with all the millions our successful alumni are donating to the school we could offer free tuition just like the Indians.
