Post-Practice Report
Tight end Junior Pomee injured his foot and left practice. It is the same foot he hurt last training camp and sidelined him for the season. Lane Kiffin said he did not know the severity of the injury.
Kiffin said he does not know if he will have enough healthy bodies to scrimmage Saturday at the Coliseum and might just hold a regular practice.
Quarterback prospect Max Browne of Sammamish, Wash., ranked by some the No. 1 prospect in the nation at his position, attended practice.
In Other News
This will disturb loyal readers: Montana fired football coach Robin Pflugrad and athletic director Jim O’Day. Pflugrad is the father of the blog’s official favorite cheerleder, Amanda Pflugrad of Oregon.
Hamstring U.
This spring USC’s suffered quite a few hamstring injuries, with wide receiver George Farmer the most notable. One player said he believed a reason was not spending enough time warming up before practice begins.
Morning Buzz
On the recruiting front, cornerback Chris Hawkins of Rancho Cucamonga is supposed to announce his college decision Sunday. Hawkins will decide among USC, Stanford and Washington. The same high school coach that raved about watching safety Su’a Cravens last weekend in Las Vegas talked in less glowing terms about the four-star cornerback in combine-type workouts. Time will tell.
Perhaps more significantly, USC recently offered 290-pound defensive tackle Toby Johnson of Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. Defensive tackle and tailback are the biggest areas of need for the Trojans.
Open Practice
Saturday’s football practice at the Coliseum at 11 a.m. is open to the public, USC announced today. Why USC could not let the public know sooner than today is an inconvenience considering how many people want to go to a practice or scrimmage and probably wish they had a little more advance notice.
Parking is $10 and cars can enter lots on the South (off Martin Luther King Blvd.) or West (off Robertson Way/Menlo Ave.).
On Love
ASU fired athletic director Lisa Love today, who formerly was the women’s volleyball coach and associate A.D. at USC.
The Sun Devils won 7 NCAA titles during Love’s tenure but that proved irrelevant because football languished and basketball was also average. Football’s struggles compounded Love’s problems because the athletic dept. had problems raising money.
The other issue worth noting is that Love got hired at the height of Pete Carroll’s success. So whether or not she was qualified, USC football got her the job. Not really the best way to make a hire.
