Double Duty

Marqise Lee continues to be the busiest player during spring practice. He will fly Friday morning to the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, and compete in the long jump Saturday, which means he will miss football practice. Cornerback Tony Burnett will fly to Texas on Wednesday, compete in the triple jump on Thursday and return Friday so he can attend Saturday’s football practice.

Post-Practice Report

Wide receiver George Farmer returned to the first part of practice but then his hamstring felt tight making some cuts and he sat out the second half.
“It’s not quite there yet,” Farmer said.
That meant even more snaps for starter Marqise Lee, who is learning all three wide receiver spots this spring.
“Marqise is showing he can play multiple positions,” wide receivers coach Tee Martin said.
Lane Kiffin said backup quarterbacks Cody Kessler and Max Wittek remain even and he is not sure when he will name a No. 2 quarterback. Defensive tackle Cody Temple underwent ankle surgery and will miss the rest of spring practice.

Should Have Called Floyd

Peyton Manning blew off a surprise meeting attempted by Pete Carroll according to
this week’s Sports Illustrated.
Here’s what Peter King wrote:

“One more surprise: Manning got a call informing him that Seahawks coach Pete Carroll had flown, unannounced, with Seattle G.M. John Schneider to the airport in Englewood. Carroll would do whatever Manning wanted–talk for a while in Denver or on the plane to Arizona, his next visit, or fly him to Seattle for a lengthier discussion.
“Peyton Manning does not like surprises. He said no thanks. Carroll flew home.”

Why didn’t Carroll call his good friend, former USC basketball coach Tim Floyd, who is so close to Manning that the quarterback worked out at USC during the summer of 2007 during a visit to Los Angeles.

Spring Fever

The star performance by De’von Flournoy during Saturday’s practice was not surprising because he’s made big plays during his entire career at USC. But the problem is too pay too much attention to the coachspeak regarding how this might mean a larger role for him in the fall.
Players who perform in spring regularly get ignored in the fall. Robert Woods and Marqise Lee are going to be stars No. 1 and 2. And does anyone seriously believe George Farmer will not be No. 3 if he is healthy? If for no other reason because Farmer did not play (and he did not redshirt) he could easily transfer?

Morning Buzz

USC defensive line coach Ed Orgeron spoke Saturday about the need to recruit a bigger pool of linemen for next year’s recruiting class. And maybe he proved the point after practice when he spent so long speaking to defensive end Kylie Fitts of East Valley High School in Redlands that Coliseum security wanted to clear them off the field so they could go home.
Fitts might graduate high school in January, which would make him more appealing to USC with three midyear scholarships to award.
