Answer Wednesday!

In this segment, USC’s recruiting needs is the main topic.

Q: CryWolf said:
does USC have any interest in Jeff Luc?

A: There is some interest. One problem is the 75-scholarship limit and the fact a scholarship could open up if a player does not remain academically eligible. But whether Luc waits is debatable. I hear USC thinks it needs a cornerback more which would make Tee Shepherd a more likely candidate.

Q: Troy said:
How many walk-ons does the football team have at the moment? Do any look promising?

A: USC keeps about 15-20 walk-ons. During spring practice, USC held tryouts and a large group of students attended. Just how promising they are isn’t determined until the fall because the new group doesn’t do much until then.

Hi Wolfie! Who do you think would make a better football coach, Pat Haden or Hitler?

A: Lane Kiffin.

Q: trojan4ever said:
Say KO gets off to a horrendous start, any chance Haden fires him during the season?

A: My feeling is Pat Haden doesn’t like the idea of firing coaches during a season because he doesn’t like to look drastic. But if things deteriorated noticeably at the start, I wouldn’t be surprised whenever a change is made.

Q: aztroy said:
Now that Lane has landed a stud RB Ty and Davis(future commit), what areas hasn’t been fulfilled in recruting in your eyes?

A: Defensive tackle is the biggest need even with Kenny Bigelow committed. Cornerback is another area of need despite Chris Hawkins’ commitment. I expect Su’a Cravens to commit so I don’t think safety will be an issue though USC would also like Max Redfield to commit. I also think USC should try to sign a legitimate fullback so it doesn’t need to convert players to the spot.

  1. Scott,

With Stanford getting an endowment for the offensive coordinator position in Andrew Luck’s name (this has to be an endowment of at least $10 million); what is the likelihood of an endowment for the position at USC (if is not already endowed)? I won’t bother to speculate as to who such an endowment would be named.

    Thanks

  2. After reading Wolf’s A to aztroy’s Q I’m not so sure he has a very solid handle on USC’s recruiting needs given the limited # of scholarships USC can offer. He suggests DT is the biggest need even with Bigelow committed. True USC had to replace both of its starting DTs from 2012. The hope was that RS FR Woods would be ready to start at NT. Apparently he was not since Kiffin listed the undersized SO Tavai. But Tavai played well in the rotation as a true FR last year & RS FR Temple will provide depth. The promising RS SO Uko will start in the 3T position. WO Kusnir is the listed back up but RS FR Heyward should get a long look in Aug since he was unavailable due to injury during spring. Bigelow is supposedly fast enough to play DE but big enough that he will likely play DT at USC in 2013. That’s 6 DTs (+ 1 WO) for 2013. Getting Woods & Heyward up to speed & getting Bigelow on campus should be sufficient.

Wolf suggests CB is another area of need. All-P12 JR Robey will continue to start & there are several good candidates for the other side. SR Wiley finished 2011 as the starter but RS JR Harris–perhaps the most talented but inconsistent CB on the roster–& RS SR Baucham–one of Carrolls favorites–are still pushing for the starting spot. RS SO Brown is penciled in to play behind Robey but he will have to compete for playing time with Wiley, Harris, and Baucham. RS FR Henderson, HS SR Seymour & HS SR Shelton will provide additional depth. And of course Hawkins has committed to enroll in 2013. That’s 7 CBs for 2013.

Wolf also thinks USC needs a true FB. USC had TEs & LBs fill in at FB in 2011. The hope for 2012 is that RS FR Vainuku (6-0, 250) will be ready to play. Kerr (6-4, 245)–a transfer from NE–is taller than a prototypical FB but HS SR Pinner (5-11, 225) will arrive in 2013. & USC will have 3 of 5 TBs over 215 lbs by 2013.

On the other hand Wolf expects Cravens to committ so he thinks S is not a problem. But even if Cravens does arrive in 2013 USC will still only have 4 Ss.

  3. I’ll take a stab at it. How about UCLA?

Actually I know this because I came up with this question originally.

  4. NJ Trojan good insight as usual. I agree with your point on fullback..add one of the tight ends to that mix (Pomnee or Thomas) in some packages.. I have been trying to plead with WOLF that the DT need is not as huge as he portrays it now that we have Bigelow in our back pocket. All four of this years two deep are underclassman and will return. Uko is a stud. Tavai at times outplayed Tupou and Woods is expected to be very good at the Nose. Heyward has been injured but should be healthy by the beginning of the season. Add Bigelow to that mix and Temple. Wheres the huge need?? USC will be bringing in one more D tackle but it seems like they have a choice between Vanderdoes, Pagano and Qualls along with some shots at an OS recruit.
As far as corner goes..i do have some concern. Wiley and Bauchan will be graduating. On top of that N Robey seems like a strong possibility to declare. If thats the case we r left with injury prone T. Harris, A. Brown and R. Henderson along with K. Seymour and Shelton. I would like to see USC get another Corner in this class for sure. Also possible Shaw could move to Corner and Shelton to safety. Ive always seen the magic number for scholarship corners as 8 (due to high amount of injuries at the position.
Safety position will be the thinnest looking at the current roster yet Wolf mentions Fullback!? we will most likely have the same amount of returning scholarship safeties as fullback!! Get a clue. D. Wright, Bowman, and Shaw. We need 3! and just our luck there is alot of depth of talent in this years recruiting class. Cravens, Goodman, Redfield, Willis and Byrd. Guess what? USC is in all of there top 3’s. Anybody out there wondering why USC is going after two receivers? ive been trying to figure it out. Assuming Woods leaves (lets hope not). LEE, FARMER, FLORNOY, AGHOLAR, BLACKWELL, RODGERS all return. Is there really a need for 2?

  5. @ Globe:

This is a Trojan board. Nobody here cares about Cal Poly, in fact most have probably never heard of it!!!

  6. AndyUSC2012, So let’s say USC loses Woods after 2012, Agholor develops into a slot back rather than a true WR & Massington follows through on his commitment. That would leave USC with 6 WRs: 1) Lee (6-0, 190), 2) Farmer (6-1, 210), 3) Blackwell (6-1, 190) & 4) Rogers (6-2, 195), are penciled in at SE with 5) Massington (6-3, 200) likely to join that group & 6) Flournoy (6-0, 180) penciled in at FL. While we can expect FRs & SOs to develop I’m less hopeful when it comes to RS JRs like Flournoy that have yet to catch a pass. So that leaves USC with 5, no? So I’d like to see 1 more WR for that reason alone.

  7. @Jethro,

I did not know this was your question as I saw it on another board. Great work!

As for Cal Poly I got my undergraduate engineering degree there (graduate degree at SC). Great education for the money, at least is was in the early 80’s.

  8. Mtbiker:

Thanks, I just wanted credit for the original idea and you wre definitly not claiming that.
As far as Cal Poly goes I agree with you. My jab was at another poster who I know quite well and he has a direct connection there as well. The school is also located in a very nice part of California that seems a million miles from L.A.

  9. Just like a small YAPPING Dog, barking all the time to get attention, looking to get that rewarding pat on the head, “Bonehead” now makes it CLEAR to everyone that, for him….posting on this board is all about “GETTING CREDIT”. What kind of limp wrist “queer fellow” makes a statement like….”I just wanted credit for the original idea”. O.K.., I give in,….you and your “sock puppet” have now been recognized. How “Queer”!
    fit on

  10. Jezro, who so queer, er why obsessed, i mean, you shouldda Never, oh forget it.

  11. I suppose I could have done what Bucket would have and gone running to tell Ms. Toni that the other kids weren’t being nice to me.
That’s the manly Bucket way of handling things, right?
