Answer Wednesday! (Part 2)

The size of USC’s defense concerns a reader in this segment of questions.

Scouting reports are showing USC with a undersized defensive line and at linebacker. The emphasis will no doubt be on speed, but playing a big-physical opponent will have consequences. Kiffin has said he expects the team to maintain its effort in flying to the ball throughout the game using substitutions & conditioning. Does the defensive side have the depth needed to at least slow down the opponent’s scoring or are we likely to see 49 to 45 wins/losses games this season?

A: I don’t see USC as undersized on the defensive line because Devon Kennard and Wes Horton are both pretty strong and good-sized defensive ends. George Uko, J.R. Tavai and Antwaun Woods are also fine from a size standpoint. At linebacker, Dion Bailey is a converted safety but outside linebackers don’t need to be big. Matt Grootegoed is the best example of that. It also helps that Lamar Dawson is playing in the middle because he makes up for any size issues.
If USC gives up 45 points in a game it will be because of a spread-offense not because it is getting manhandled physically, in my opinion.

wolfman, although i am semi-retired from commenting, allow me to point out the difference between me and the Fake Son of Bucket: if the comment is unfunny or lacks keen insight…it’s the fake.
now for my question: the #1 ranked trOXan wollyball team (with the Player of the Year, sound familiar?), lost the Natl. Champeeenship on their home court recently in a huge upset.
do you think this failure to meet lofty expectations despite having the “golden boy player of the year”, is a gloomy harbinger of doom for the similarly situated football team?? the eeriness of it brought me chills.

A: No.

Now with the Coliseum agreement, can you address improvements that are planned, the time line, and if any of these include luxury suites or other improvements that would bring in more revenue?

A: Among the improvements planned are replacing every seat in the stadium, renovating the locker rooms and upgrading concessions. I’ve not heard anything about luxury suites. USC can sell naming rights, which would be a source of revenue. It can also increase revenue by hosting other events at the Coliseum.

  1. 1. I think Wolf provided a terrific answer to the first question.
    2. Nice job clowning that geek Bucket, Wolf!
    3. Can we somehow get our seat from the Coli to put in the backyard?! Believe Dodger Stadium did something similar… would be sugary sweeeeeet!!

  2. Ave HT & WT of DTs at last 3 NFL Combines were 6-2, 305. Ave HT & WT of USC’s DTs are 6-2, 287. Ave HT & WT of DEs at last 3 NFL Combines were 6-3, 271. Ave HT & WT of USC’s DEs are 6-3, 256.

Ave HT & WT of ILBs at last 3 NFL Combines were 6-1, 243. Ave HT & WT of USC’s MLBs are 6-2, 230. Ave HT & WT of OLBs at last 3 NFL Combines were 6-1, 244. Ave HT & WT of USC’s OLBs are 6-0, 216.

USC’s front seven are undersized. USC lost 2 games last year. Only 1 of those teams–ASU–played any form of spread O. SU played a play-action pro-style O. Against spread Os, speed & tackling are more important than size. But against play-action, pro-style & smash-mouth Os size is just as important. Truly, USC plays a 4-2-5 D, which partially explains why they are so undersized at LB.

  3. ChuckerBucker – neither of you has ever posted anything that was either funny or insightful. That’s why it’s so hard to tell you apart.

  4. NJ Trojan, thanks you for insight. I would sure like to see this year’s defense shut down yards up the middle better than the previous 2-years.

  5. TC – we need total transparency on this blog. When any particpant (not including bruin trolls) are dismissed for expressing whatever sentiment, there should be some accountability from Wolf and his girl friend Toni.

  6. Again, who gives a sh*t. The main problem with this blog is that the bloggers trying to make it about them. They get off seeing their idiotic posts, and then getting responses from others. Here’s a novel idea, let’s discuss USC.
