Here’s my column on why the collapse of the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten alliance is a setback for conference commissioner Larry Scott, but not necessarily for USC. Link here.

  1. People are afraid to admit that USC is scared to play competition. This year they play Hawaii and next year they play Utah State. I just looked at their schedule for this year and next. You idiots have nothing to say to this. Know who is better than you.

    Bill

  2. Relax Bill. Everyone else in the Pac 12 plays a Utah St or 2 every year. Most years Notre Dame is our 2nd toughest non-league game.

  3. The #1 football conference(SEC) has no alliance , so why would it be an embarrassment to the Pac12….wolfman your logic is flawed

  4. Wolf’s entire argument seems to be that it is generally better for fans to travel to Big 10 cities than non-Big-10 cities.

Lansing, West Lafayette, Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington, Evanston, Ann Arbor, Happy Valley, Iowa City, Lincoln are hardly exciting places to spend a weekend, and each are typically difficult to travel to. Of the 12 cities that comprise the Big-10 conference, Madison is really the only appealing one.

And its not as if Pac-12/Big 10 schools are precluded from scheduling OOC games on their own. And I prefer SC to schedule its own conference game than some league official. But as is usually the case, Wolf finds something to bitch about.

  5. Uhhhhh… teams USC has scheduled out of conference the past decade: Virginia Tech, Auburn, Ohio State, Arkansas, Nebraska… need I really continue?

    50-0

  6. Fifty to nothing is the score when it comes to you and girls. 50 is how many times you have struck out. And 0 is how many times you have scored. Know who is better than you.

    Bill

  7. Thank you Mr. Scott. The odds of USC playing a Big Ten team every year are quite high. Texas or Texas A&M, and Notre Dame sounds good to me for OOC schedule.

  8. He looks all coked up and ready to catch a flight to New York at a moment’s notice to fill in for Mr. Stern.

  9. Really was looking forward to USC’s classic matchups with Indiana, Northwestern, Purdue and Illinois. Not to mention Michigan visiting Pullman WA and Ohio State hosting Arizona or Colorado. USC & the SEC has beaten up this conference so much recently it’s not even competition.

  10. Bill,

There really is no need for you to sign your name at the end of every one of your very insightful posts. Every commenter’s name appears above it so there is never a mystery as to who wrote it.

  11. Brother Jethro, did you notice “Fort Worth’s” comment in today’s LA Times? He makes a bold assertion concerning JoPa.

    And I haven’t noticed our multi-handled friend around lately…coincidence?

  12. Wolf…go be the beat writer for WASHINGTON STATE! WHO GIVES A FRACK ABOUT WASH ST! Seriously, you mention how this would have benefitted them. Why should USC be penalized so Wash St has a good non-conference foe?
This is why an 8 team playoff rewarded conference champs would be better. Scheduling great non-conference games wouldn’t hurt, since if you win your conference you’re in. Actually to get one of the 2 or 3 wild card spots, it would be benefitual to have some of these great non-conf games.

  13. Brother Dupree,

I did see the comment in the LAT. Furthermore, around the same time many Angelenos were reading that comment Mr. Bucket asked an eerily similar question in the open forum here.
I could be wrong but I think that city in Texas is trying to play tricks on us.

  14. Evanston is 15 miles north of Rush and Division Streets in Chicago and is not difficult to travel to….you can fly in to O’Hare or Midway and stay downtown and take the El train to the game. It would have been a great weekender the year we are playing the Irish at the Coliseum.

  15. gotroy –

You are correct. I should not have added Northwestern/Evanston to the list, and it would be a great weekender.

From an alumni/fan experience, the Big-10 gained more by playing Pac-12 schools (other than maybe at Wash State and Oregon State) than did the Pac-12 playing in 10 of 12 locations, which are arguably less fun although more hospitable.

And SC controls its schedule for the 2 remaining OOC games, which will hopefully be against SEC, Big-12 and Big-10 schools.

  16. Jethro, look out — my imitator has struck again. Beware the handle written in bold. I took the weekend off and did not even see this infringement until today. Nor did I catch Fort Wayne’s comment in the LAT.

Also, I prefer to refer to our friend as “Fort Wayne”, for personal reasons.

  17. W.E.B.

Noted. Now it’s obvious that city in Indiana is playing tricks on us. Ironic coming from someone who cries about other people using someone’s good name.
