Arms Race

There’s been some summer reports, including from some national media, that USC quarterback Matt Barkley’s arm strength improved. I’m always skeptical of reports like this (or massive improvement lifting weights) during the offseason, so I asked Barkley if his arm is stronger.
“No,” Barkley said. “I feel like I’m throwing hard when it is appropriate and easy when it was appropriate. I don’t think it’s changed.”

His arm is strong enough if he sees an open receiver 40-50 yards down the field, the ball will get here. That is all the opposing coaches need to know. As we have seen in the past 10 years, play-caller Kiffin is much more likely to call a long bomb than Norm Chow did.
