  1. Does anybody want to talk about the OL before preseason camp? The starting line-up looks pretty good. In spring 2011 RS SR Holmes (6-4, 305) moved from G to C & he ended up earning 2nd-team all-P12 honors last year. But who’s going to back him up? Coming off a season ending foot injury former WO Markowitz (6-1, 310) has one year of eligibility remaining but I don’t recall him actually playing a meaningful role in any games. Apparently RS SO DiPoalo (6-4, 290) who missed the 2011 season after having pre-season shoulder surgery did not perform well enough in practice to earn the second spot behind Holmes. Has anybody seen enough of DiPoalo to comment on what his chances are going forward? I’m thinking USC may turn to a G if Holmes goes down but that would raise other concerns.

  2. It only took a few weeks for SO Martin (6-3, 325) to win the starting job at LG as a true FR last year & RS JR Martinez (6-2, 300) stepped up at RG. According to the post spring depth chart RS FR Hobbi (6-3, 295) willback up Martin on the left. Is Hobbi really ready to step in if needed? Backing up Martinez on the right USC will have SR Galten (6-5, 290) who transferred from JC in spring 2011. Incoming FR Simmons (6-5, 335) has the size & supposedly the talent to push for immediate playing time & incoming Tuerk (6-6, 295) was also highly rated. I’m thinking if Holmes goes down, Martinez slides over & Galten steps up leaving Hobbi & Simmons (or Tuerk) as the #2 Gs.

  3. With Kalil’s early departure OT looks shakier to me but I still like USC’s starters. Apparently SO Walker (6-6, 300) who played a little at LG last year “outpracticed” RS JR Graf (6-6, 295) this sping so Graf will start again on the right & Walker will take Kalil’s spot on the left. But WO Guertler (6-5, 275) a RS SO is still listed as the back-up LT. What’s up with RS JR Garness (6-5, 295)? He transferred from JC in spring 2011 but dind’t play last year. Is he really going to back-up Graf on the right? FR Wheeler (6-7, 270) enrolled early. Will he be ready to step up? Banner (6-9, 335) has size & supposedly the talent to push for immediate playing time in 2012. I’m thinking that Banner will be Graf’s backup & if Walker goes down Graf slides over to the left.

  4. So Redd wants to meet face to face with the top recruiter in the nation before deciding what to do. He is a lock at this point. Welcome to the family Silas. Fight On!

  6. Penn State coach Bill O’Brien hasn’t even talked with Redd, according to the coach himself on Rome. He is a lock.

This is how recruiting is done. This is why you save 1 schollie, so you can poach a great player from a team with an impending death penalty. Lane! F—ing! Kiffen!

  7. @BoscoH: I don’t think Redd would count against USC’s initial 18. I know he would count against the 75 limit but I don’t think USC would lose an initial would they?

  8. @NJT.. Actually Hobbi is being groomed to backup K. Holmes. He’d also if necessary backup any of the G’s.

I think I read that if Redd were to go to USC, it would count definitely against the 75 and against the 2012 limitations, so I’m assuming that we may have to get creative with one of the EE’s

  9. Sorry NJ, just saw your answer on the other question. So my new question is how do we take Redd if we are at 75 now?

  10. I guess Coach Kiff is counting on someone failing to qualify (Rogers?). Redd would count against the 75 but not against the 15/18 for signing day.

  11. NJ…a key might be that Penn State is only returning one starter on the OL.

  12. @carlosb: Even if Hobbi is being groomed to succeed Holmes next year as you say I still think Martinez slides over 1st if Holmes goes down this year and Galten steps up before Hobbi. So your 1st 4 interior OLs would be Holmes, Martinez, Martin & Galten. As long as no more than 1 of them goes down at any given time the interior OL should be just fine. Hopefully USC will blowout some opponents early and we’ll get to see some play from Markowitz, Hobbi & DiPoalo. Simmons & Tuerk will probably RS, no?

  13. I think that Markowitz backed up Holmes in Spring practice and could be the guy, and Hobbi although being whom I think they want to succeed Holmes, would as you said, probably see more time at Guard. I really also hope for some blowouts so to get the depth as much experience as possible. Same goes with the D line!
