Ballot Fallout

USC officials are angry that USA Today revealed Lane Kiffin’s top 25 ballot because the established guidelines say the ballot will only be revealed at the end of the season.
But Kiffin’s logic for voting USC No. 1 raises questions.
Here is his quote to USA Today: “We have less players than everybody else. So looking at it from the outside, I wouldn’t (vote USC No. 1). Did I? Yeah, I did. That’s not based off of 75 vs. 85.
“That’s based off of Matt Barkley, T.J. McDonald and Robert Woods and Marqise Lee. When everybody has the same record, I can’t go into a meeting with our players and have them say, `You put that team and that team ahead of us.’ That’s why I did that.”
So here are two questions:
1.) If ballots were confidential, Kiffin’s players would not find out if he selected USC No. 1.
2.) Isn’t the integrity of Kiffin’s ballot compromised if he voted based on fears of what his players thought?

  1. I guess it really isn’t that big of a deal unless he is stupid enough to vote them #1 when they are in 3rd place in the Pac 10 South and Barkles is in the corner crying!

  4. 1. No. Behind closed doors, he would discuss this with more honesty than he thinks he owes the media.
    2. Isn’t the integrity of every ballot compromised by the fact that it’s an active coach casting it?

    And so, Kiffin did what?– Fudged on the fact he voted SC No. 1

  7. Furthermore, the team’s players have to be excited that its coach thinks this highly of them.

    Their thinking might be “Coach was hiding his true feelings about us, but now we know he thinks we’re the best in the U.S. So let’s go out and prove Coach right; let’s not let him down.”

  8. Confidentiality in this case was a promise from USA Today, not a multi-lateral condition of participation from all sides.

    And frankly, if Kiffin didn’t game this incident from the beginning, he is milking it for all it’s worth now. Those kids would probably give their lives for him. They will have no problem finding the motivation within themselves to go out and demolish opponents now.
