No. 2 Wait

Lane Kiffin said during today’s practice that he will decide Tuesday morning whether Cody Kessler or Max Wittek is the backup quarterback.
“We gave both guys reps today,” Kiffin said. “They both did great (Saturday).”

  1. I think Kessler starts the year year at #2 but Wittek wins the starting job in Aug 2013.

  2. NJ Trojan, I agree about Kessler this year. IMHO, Wittek’s two INTs last week did him in. Unless they happened by other than QB error, which is probably doubtful. Tough break.

However, NJ, IMHO, if Kessler gets all the #2 reps and coaching attention this year, and the late-game playing time, and maybe more, Kessler will gain a material advantage toward next year.

You may say Wittek evened it up last year in the same circumstances, but LK didn’t want either one to play at all, and there was less pressure to focus on the #2 being ready.

There is much talk about Wittek’s strong arm and height. But isn’t USC a West Coast offense? Joe Montana did not have an especially strong arm, or great height. Neither did Leinart have a great arm.

I’m not saying that Wittek isn’t different but equal. But so is Kessler. It’s because of that equality that Kessler will gain a material advantage from being the #2 this year.

  3. I think Kiffin wants Wittek to start in 2013. I think he want Kessler to back him up. And I think he wants Browne to RS. I think the way he keeps them all in the fold through the end of 2013 is to give Kessler & Wittek roughly equal snaps this year (unless of course there is an injury). Then Kiffin should keep the 3-way competition open through the 1st week of preseason camp unless 1 truly emerges as the superior QB. Kessler’s not going to leave after the 2013 season starts & he’ll be a RS JR at the end of it. He could TR in spring 2014 but then Browne will be a RS FR & USC should have a new QB on the way.
