Ban Lift

I was informed earlier this evening that I would be allowed to return to USC football practices after a two-day ban for writing that kicker Andre Heidari underwent knee surgery.
Sports editors from the Daily News, Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register spoke with USC athletic director Pat Haden today. Talks continue on the practice policies.

  7. Friends of mine who weren’t fortunate (perhaps not skilled) enough to attend USC or don’t see the true beauty of the place constantly poke at me that my school’s head football coach is too much of a meathead for their liking.

Of course I have been giving him the benefit of the doubt since he took over and the winning/undeniable team mettle has helped vindicate me. Then days like today arrive where Kiffin can’t control his paranoia over the beat writer of a rather nondescript local paper(albeit Wolf used to dominat this beat royally) and I’m sort of defenseless over his (Kiffin’s) credibility.

Yes, all you Wolf hounders in here, the head coach of the preseason No. 1 team in the nation is concerned about squashing Scott the week of his conference opener against a team that he has never beaten before. Score one for the Kiffin cynics.

  8. DiamondD, with all due respect, Sir, it’s obvious you don’t read Wolf.
Many of the same people who praised, nee celebrated, the ban would probably have joined you in opposing it had it been imposed on any of the other writers out there. Wolf is a petty, smarmy troll. As a USC alum, he brings more shame to the university through his childish antics and poor writing skills than anything Lane Kiffin has done to date.

  9. arealrascal, thanks for the polite rebuttal and just to respond……Been reading this blog for quite a long darn time now actually, long enough to remember when it was perfectly useful for any true USC football conosseiur. Slowly it started to go south around the time Wolf’s Pac-10 cheerleader craze kicked in. Taken some bizarre turns since, however no matter what Wolf still manages now and then to provide a refreshing alternative to the bombastic sense of Trojan invincibility that exists just about everywhere else.

To see the flaws of the program under SW’s microscope doesn’t bother me as an alumnus…being on campus once I used to see those flaws up close and it’s nice to know what areas are weakening (especially in light of the Bush fiasco) in this ox-strong Southland sports bedrock that countless people througout LA derive inspiration from.

That being said, it’s not comforting to know Kiffin either a.) is insecure enough to feel threatened by any member of the media, ESPECIALLY this “petty, smarmy troll” journalist you write of, or b.) feels so empowered about his position on campus that he can make such a bold move like ban a newspaper writer for doing his job (….think about all the many clowns in the 21st-century mediasphere and yet very very few are checked like this). Worse yet, I’m not ruling out that both could be the case.

I hope, hope, HOPE Kiffin proves me wrong in time by being as transparent and confident as a coach can be. The Trojan Family deserves it.

  10. It doesn’t take a Rhodes Scholar to see the writing on the wall with this one. Whatever you think of Scott Wolf, how this episode played out was preordained the minute Kiffin “banned” Wolf. Kiffin is showing yet again what a child he is and his boss is showing his usual lack of both spinal cord and judgment by letting one of his charges ban a “journalist” in the first place. All-in an embarrassing episode for the University.

  11. I would argue that there was a time when Wolf’s take was contrarian but insightful – but especially now, he has taken to criticizing every petty thing, from the socks the players have, to the I-told-you-so about the shoes. Not to mention grammatical errors that a five year old could spot.

In related news, do you think Wolf appears as more than a blip on the radar to Kiffin? Here’s how the ban conversation probably went:
“You know Kiffin, some Wolf guy published something about Heidari’s injury.”
“He did? Well, let’s just ban him for a couple weeks.”
    “Okay.”

  12. Bucket,

This may be your saddest episode to date. You wave your arms and shout louder than ever looking for attention and the only response you get is from yourself under a different screen name.

  13. ^^^^exactly….bucket is nothing but a sad unhappy, fuckin idiot, that’s experiencing a bad case of penis envy

  14. It was cool to see that Bruce Feldman agrees with my point yesterday:

“Bruce Feldman at CBSSports.com: Not sure banning media from practice is hot idea. Can end w/ them digging for stories more troubling than inj reports”

Don’t get me wrong. I am the biggest CLFK fan on this board. I posted flip comments here about how maybe SC could steal him away from Knoxville. But CLFK has to understand that the sportswriters here will ultimately save him or can him when things get tough. That’s how this town works. That’s how he got his job here in the first place. Same with the guy before him.

The visor wearing, white after Labor Day CLFK does not need to engage in petty marginal competitive advantage BS like this. And he doesn’t need to be at war with reporters and papers. They’re an important part of the landscape that he needs to embrace.

    Pfight the Pf— On, Scott!

  15. BUAHAHAHAHAHA these pussies that were celebrating your ban from the practices will now go back to crying like little bitches. Scott, just for the embarrassment that you had to endure for Lame Kitten’s immaturity and compulsive behavior, you should be nasty as hell towards that pompous idiot…we all thought Caesar was arrogant, Kitten is twice as bad.

  16. I absolutely agree with Bruin Rob. Be mean, and nasty, and do everything in your power to get the permaban! Great idea Bruin Rob!

  17. BoscoH, Lev over at the OC Register made that same point on his own blog — ban the beat reporters from practice, and they’ll have to spend their time doing investigative reporting.

Then again, maybe in the long run that wouldn’t be so bad, if it prevents a Threat Level Sandusky type of scandal.

  18. @DiamondD, Do you honestly believe that A) The head football coach at THE or one of THE top programs in the history of college football is in any way intimidated by that smarmy troll hack Scott Wolf? Do you also really feel that CLK was in any way, the significant factor in Scott Wolf deliberately violating established set policy under which was the edict that access could be terminated? He was not preventing Wolf from doing his job, he was preventing Wolf from the opportunity to further deliberately violate policy associated with his job. It was Wolf that was keeping himself from doing his job in the proper manner.

It is interesting DD that you feel our historical football reputation portrays under your term “bombastic”. I’d offer that our rich and illustrious reputation is well deserved by her excellence over time. It is also interesting that you probably feel that the University had a lot of direct association in the “Bush fiasco”. Finally it is interesting that you consider it refreshing that a baseless smarmy troll hack that primarily limits his investigative journalistic effort to web surfing, even exists, to cherry pick negatives about your university to post on a website that you’ve yourself declared as having gone South.
Fight On, but possibly in your case refresh on!

  19. I say let him in. He’s a lightweight anyway. Just blogs away in his newspaper articles. I guess it’s a reflection of where newspapers have gone and how it has effected reporters

  20. @W.E.B.: It’s a pretty obvious point. I really don’t like this attitude that seems to have taken over this coaching staff that the reporters are there to print the team’s press releases. It’s not even an arrogant attitude. It’s a clueless one. An arrogant attitude would be looking forward to speaking with the reporters at the end of practice and throwing one or two of the players to the lions for shits and giggles. It would be a lot healthier too for everyone.

  21. Wow. Are they still teaching Writing 120 at USC. Some of my fellow alums may need to look over their notes.
