Remembering Cook

There was a big loss today for college football when it was announced ESPN analyst Beano Cook passed away at 81. Every conversation I ever had with Cook was highly entertaining and he always asked about the USC song girls because he remembered them from visiting the Coliseum way back when.
Just calling him was an adventure because he never said, “hello.” Often it was something like, “Lt. Columbo.” But his appreciation of the history of college football was unparalled and he could tell you about Army teams in the 1940’s as easily as Alabama teams today.
As the saying goes, they don’t make them like that anymore.

  1. Beano’s best comment came in 2002 ” Only Germany in World War 2 has played a tougher road schedule than USC ‘

2002 , man what a year … it was so fun when USC was good , well coached , fun to watch. This garbage now makes you want to puke.

  2. He had his moments. But he tried to be too cute with his schtick of never fully answering a question given him and then defending his half-answer by arguing over it with the questioner. It got old… And whenever he could, he mentioned ND somehow like he was being paid to.
