Discuss The Game

Sorry but I again have to return to Lane Kiffin. Going conservative. Throwing to fullback. Blowing off Marqise Lee much of second half.

Fire lane kiffin, he lost two games we should win easily. He is not enough for usc coach. So immature and too conservative coach. Poor usc players.

    • datrout

agreed. and the rest of the merry men too…

  • Spedjones

Do they make college football days any better than today? Haha, SUC on!

  • jkstewart2

Scott, you are absolutely correct. Those two series in the 2nd half when they did a 3 and out were the difference. Barkley shares the burden for this game. Those pics just don’t cut it and after four years he hasn’t changed a lick. I’m not sure SC can win a championship with Kiffin. He is a great recruiter, but doesn’t seem to have a good strategical sense of the game. In addition, the team seems undisciplined on defense and offense. Personally, I would like someone who seems to enjoy what they are doing. I’d also like someone who doesn’t tunnel vision to one player. Getting the record and loosing the game isn’t a good tradeoff. Last year was made by the upset at Oregon. This year may get brutal… If SC gets humbled by Oregon and looses a couple more games (very very possible) will Kiffin’s job be on the line???

so why is he a great recruiter ?

  • Lauren Grantham

Scott, please be a good reporter and bring to light the horrible 2 minute offense… it’s like Matt Barkley has never run it. Why are they not spiking the ball after the first down? I counted 18-21 seconds wasted because MB did not spike the ball after getting the first down. what the heck??? Horrible coaching.

  • charlie

Fire Kiffin, very good recruiter but not a very good coach, in over his head. Second half adjustments (or lack thereof) is indicative. Not ready for prime time.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dino-Marconi/571306734 Dino Marconi

who has he recruited at USC ? Lee was a gift who wanted to be at USC.

    • Golden Trojan

Not even a good recruiter if you get guys with talent but no brains (penalties), or maybe that is inability to teach and instill discipline.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ruby-Jones/100003205514101 Ruby Jones

Certainly fire his old man who has a proven record of failure at SC. And his second half adjustments? They simply go from inept to horrible.

“so the score that Az can win is: az 38 usc 35″

I was pretty darn close to picking the score, so do I win anything???

Az did all it could to let USC take it to overtime:

    – fail going for 2
    – kickoff deep to Lee
    – pull its starter
    – give the ball back to USC
    – let USC get 11 yds per play at end of game

I thought for certain that your team would tie it up…

that’s what happens when you stay in games w/ pac12 teams instead of putting them away

next week is going to be awesome

I love it how everyone wants Lane’s scalp — maybe justifiably? — but is mute about one of the worst shreddings of our defense in 70 years. I thought the defense made a lot of plays; Arizona made a lot of good things happen.

Not spiking the ball on the last possession strikes me as absolutely insane, and cost us about 18 seconds. Maybe a couple ticks less. Run down the field, out of timeouts after a first down throw and stand at the line of scrimmage and call signals. No sense. Maybe that’s on Kiffin.

Check the record: From the moment Barkley overthrew the most wide open receiver I’ve ever seen, we dropped and Arizona made play after play after play. That would have made in 35-13. Three possessions later, we were losing.

I might remind all of you that the record Marquise Lee broke was also set in a losing game. And spare me the cheap shots about not throwing to him enough. I wish we hadn’t run the reverse to him on a 4th down play we desperately needed. Marquise simply did not want to take a hard hit, so he tried to elude two defenders. That was very disappointing.

There’s almost no way that any team or any player can make huge play after major catch after perfect throw. We were getting massive plays and could not sustain. Arizona dropped a lot of balls in the first half, but their receivers were terrific in the 4th quarter.

Someone tell Josh Shaw to stop acting like such a punk. He should be better than that. It was ironic that two plays after he did his celebratory act after only sort of defending a pass in the end zone … he gets torched for the game winner. We need to demand more class from our players.

As for Kiffin, the one thing I have to say is that this team has seemed to be anxious, nervous and tense from about the third minute of the Hawaii game. Is that on the coach? At least some.

McDonald is a thug, he cost USC once today and got burned on a td on another.

      • DT-89

Ugh. I think it falls mostly under “trying to make a play” … and I do believe he is unfairly targeted by the refs. But I have to admit this to Ben: We know we’re being scrutinized. It’s reality. Have to play accordingly, don’t we?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Doverz/1423558008 Ben Doverz

Looked like Barkley went into the desert before the game and found some peyote, man was he bad

    • TrojanFan

The guy threw for 500 yards, you fuckin idiot

      • tqt08

Barkley had a great game yardage wise. He had 2 picks along with 2 to 3 other passes that were flat out dropped by the AZ defenders and missed on two big throws (end zone to Grimble, wide open Robert Woods). He had a wide open RB in the flat on a critical 4th down play in the 2nd half and failed to see a wide open TE who could’ve easily had the 1st down when he decided to throw to Grimble on that 4th down in the first half. He was far from great today. I’m not saying he was awful but this game showed some of Barkley’s weaknesses. There were some throws that he made that really made you wonder what the hell he was thinking.

        • ThaiMex

His mind is frazzled….must be that HEAVY Class Load (1 class) he’s carrying this semester ! SUCks….#1 in the preseason! Mercy Nurse!, this time, next week….SUCks will be on a TWO (2) GAME LOSING STREAK that could EASILY turn into a FIVE (5) game STREAK that would certainly translate into a CONTRACT BUY OUT for Goat Boy! Honestly though,…we’d be very happy to have that idiot coaching SUCks for many many years! Interesting to compare Larry smiths record as head coach @ SUCks and compare it to Goat boy’s record. GUARANTEED, next year Goat Boy gets fired (unless he delivers on that 5 game losing streak this year and gets canned).
          MERCY NURSE, fit on Torgan!
          (when does Basketball start?)

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ben-Doverz/1423558008 Ben Doverz

Hey Monte. Backup QB, gonna run the ball to run clock, you might want to defend for that, you senile old fart

  • http://www.facebook.com/charles.bucket.3 Charles Bucket

Oh by the way, although Better Booty has NEVER led a comeback, it IS POSSIBLE!!!

take for example, our FRESHMAN QB. faced with a driving the LEGNTH of field with only a minute left TRAILING by a point, OUR FRESHMAN calmly marches his team down the field to set up the winning field goal with time EXPIRING!!

    OH! I FEEL SO ALIVE!!!!!

    And tingly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/charles.bucket.3 Charles Bucket

by the way wolfman: too many MONEY QUOTES to count!!
    eres en fuego, hombre!!!
    (you are on fire, man!!!)
you always seem to raise your game to a whole ‘NOTHER LEVEL in big games!!!
too bad Better Booty cant raise HIS game when the trOXans need it!!!!

I’m beginning to think the run from 2003-2005 was really, really special.

  • datrout

I think it’s pretty sad for a program that prides itself on having
landed more players with the most “STARS” beside their name to display such
heartless play on the field. While Lane Kiffen appears to have the knack to
haul in the “STARS” he doesn’t appear to know how to win, put together
consistent successful game plans, make the necessary adjustments during a game to seal the deal or to run a program that is disciplined, focused and able to win championships. Additionally Matt Barkley is suddenly just very average and has shown that his Achilles heal is that he cannot find an open receive unless he has the #9 on his jersey. Wow…how the “STARS” have fallen……. Possible replacements for Lane Kiffen:

    June Jones (SMU)
    Chris Petersen (Boise State)
    Gary Andersen (Utah State)
    John Carroll (Oceanside High School)

ANY of these gentlemen would draw the same interest of the “STARS”
simply because….IT’s USC. BUT, I think
given their track records, they know that it’s the size of the players HEART
    that counts most.

  • tqt08

This game really exploited Lane Kiffin as a coach. He’s consistently outcoached in the second half due to his failures to make adjustments. The decision to go conservative in the third quarter up two scores was extremely questionable. Barkley also showed a lot of weaknesses. His stats were good thanks to all of those YAC yardage from Lee but he failed to hit on some key passes (deep ball to Woods, end zone 4th down pass to Grimble, etc) and made a ton of questionable decisions (two INT’s, 2-3 other balls that defenders just dropped, failed reads). I know Barkley isn’t the best as a scrambler but he needs to make better decisions when the pocket breaks down. The line did a very good job protecting him but on the few times that they didn’t, Barkley looked bad when under duress.

Who knows whose fault it was when they failed to spike the ball with 20 seconds left. It was embarrassing.

  • Spedjones

Dont worry Trogans, Lane was just saving the play book for Oregon!

  • http://www.facebook.com/Ilovethecapper John Johns

If you are going to replace Kiff, REPLACE Haden. He’s just as guilty, except for the WHOLE athletic dept.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Ilovethecapper John Johns

    NO BS

  • Tucson Sailor

See you all next year. maybe with a new coach.? Your team has tons of talent but your coaching staff is stiff and predictable. Beardown Az.!!!

  • The Greatest

Its just painful to watch. USC has 4-5 legitimate NFL caliber players… there’s absulutely no reason for them to be 6-2 vs. 8-0. Additionally, if you examine the calls and coaching you’ll see that both Lane and Monte Kiffin are being out-coached. Allowing Arizona to convert a 3rd down-22 yards at a critial time is inexcusable. Both Lane Kiffin and his no-defense dad Monte have got to go… NOW.

  • The Greatest

An undisciplined football team, that does not play to its talent potential, is a direct reflection on the head coach. Fire both Kiffins now, and start the new head coach search early.
