New Offense?

Some college coaches have suggested to me that USC needs to add the spread offense — or elements of it — in order to avoid falling behind schools that beat the Trojans this season like Oregon, Arizona and UCLA.

Lane Kiffin seems resistant because his background is in pro-style offenses. So why not hire an offensive coordinator that can install some spread plays?

  1. Are you kidding, our problem is we don’t own the line of scrimmage either on offense or defense. I think Alabama is doing pretty good without a spread offense.

    • That’s a very good point. You don’t need the spread to be a successful college football team, you just need to defend it at a high level

    • Slow footed QB’s, like oversized, inflexible safeties and the Tampa 2, are things of the past. Barkley, like Taylor Mays and Monte Kiffen, are relics of the way the game was played 10-20 years ago. It’s too bad, because both Barkley and Mays are pretty good kids who did everything that was asked of them, and as much as we bag on Monte, he was as influential on the game as was Buddy Ryan and Don Coryell. It’s not their fault the game is changing.

That said, when your defense is surrendering 500+ yards over the last five games pf the season, incorporating elements of a “spread” offense is the least of your worries.

Exactly, the defense gave up way too many big plays, especially between the 20 and 20. Had this been one of Pete’s defenses of the past, we might be punching a ticket to a BSC bowl game and a break here and there, a trip to the Natty

We had a lot of pieces to the puzzle, but the powers that be, couldn’t put them in place

    • Is it that easy?! Let’s see who Kiffin would be able to convince to call plays, other than someone not named Tedford.

      • Kiffin could do a lot worse himself than Tedford on offense. And Kiffin could do a lot worse than Pedergast (CALS D-coordinator) versus his dad. You give those coaches the athletes they need and if they keep their egos under control (hello Kiffin) they will do alright. Kiffin should just recruit year around, walk up & down the sideline during a game, growling like Nick Saban, but with a coloring book in his hand instead of a playsheet and leave the other coaches the hell alone to do their thing.

        • Did you see Tedford’s play calling at the end of the Ohio State game? He is completely lacking in nerve. You don’t want him calling plays for us.

  2. I said a while back and here it comes back today: Today’s successful programs mostly have duel-threat QBs that can pass AND can flat-out run the ball. Look at the top successful programs over the last 7-8 years. The PAC-12 is loaded with duel-threat QBs.

      • Right? Other than Cam Newton, look at the QBs winning national titles. Don’t include Tebow, he was never dual-threat.

        • Exactly, Florida won with a great defense, Tebow was a over sized running back playing QB with pathetic passing skills….I still scratch on head, wondering how Tebow is still a QB in the NFL

          • Great! and the following week he went 9 for 26, 136 yards, 34% completed, and a passer rating of 52. His career passer rating is 72, just pathetic. You judge a player on his body of work, not one game

      • Texas had a monster,( remember?) Auburn took it all the way (did you forget?) Tebow got some love (or does he count?) Look at what Ohio St. did this year (12 & 0) with a running QB. Oregon almost got it with a QB runner but LSU beat them. Stanford has a runner, so does UCLA and they turned their season around. I could go on with more examples if you need them… I didn’t say defense didn’t win titles, I just said running QBs win in college football today!

  3. Wait. What’s going on here? Did Pat Haden call you and ask you to form a consensus on making Kiffin stay another year? Hiring new assistants will NEVER work as long as Kiffin is in there. A team, especially a college team, is only as good as your head coach. Look at all the elite teams today. What’s the common denominator? Yeah, you got it. All of them have “elite” coaches. And Lane Kiffin? NOT!!!

  4. A spread offense is a poor man’s version of success– like a Porsche Boxster. USC can succeed just fine with a pro-style offense. They just need a competent play caller.

  5. Should be interesting to see if Lane is capable of “recruiting” a well-respected coach for OC and/or DC positions. Youd think the name of USC would have drawing power, now let’s see how much respect Kiffin garners from someone not a member of his own family.

    • The problem will not be how well the USC name draws interest, it is how much Kiffin will attempt to protect his turf by eliminating anyone who he feels will question his judgement.

  6. Because the spread is a gimmick, and does not make for fun football to watch. It is especially impotent when it falters. It would hurt recruiting, as it doesn’t develop skills needed for these kids to get paid for playing on Sunday. I could go on and on. Spread defense, however… That would be great for our players’ prospects in the NFL.

      • Kaepernick is the real deal. The guy has an NFL arm and excellent accuracy. Give credit to his HC Harbaugh for developing QBs and for game planning an effective offense, which is definitely missing at SC. Brad is correct, the spread is a gimmick. It doesn’t require for the QB to read the defense instead, go through a numbering system when it comes to finding an open receiver. Also, spread offense relies one-on-one matchups, which is always an advantage to the offensive player.

  7. SC’s problem is a bad defense. They play a soft zone…and the Tampa two works if you have a monster dline….the dline line is good but not awesome

  8. THE NEXT YEAR WILL BE A WASTE , KIFFIN CAN NOT COACH. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE HAD TO COME BACK FROM BEHIND THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. AFTER A BOWL GAME NEXT YEAR IN NO WHERE USA(IF WE ARE LUCKY). THEN A NEW COACH COMES IN AND NORMALLY THAT YEAR IS WASTED. SO THE MINIMUM OF 2 YEARS WASTED. GET RID OF KIFFIN NOW AND WE SAVE A YEAR. THE FANS ARE NOT GOING TO STAND FOR THIS.
REMEMBER LOSS OF TICKET SALES WILL COST USC !!!!!!!!!

  9. I’ve told people when I first watched Max Wittek, he is going to be a stud. I’ve always felt he would have a better carreer then MB7 (no disrespect) but that’s If he’s coached correctly, the team change offensive schemes to confuse defenses, and have a more aggresive approach, this SC team can be deadly under his control. Strong arm. Pro-style offense is the way to go but it’s okay to incorporate some spread formations every now and then.

  10. Your friends across town hope and pray that USC always keeps the pro-set offense, continues to recruit big, slow quarterbacks who can’t run, and never moves into the 21st century with a spread-oriented offense.

    • So, I’m curious, do bruins only own the Rose Bowl in November (twice in 14 years) or do you plan to ever do so in January? bahahaha

  11. Running a pro-style offense is a selling point to smart recruits who know that’s what they need to know to succeed at the next level.

And I agree with most everyone else who’s posted. Work on the defense first.

  12. You guys all sound like a bunch of PU$$IES!!! What youre scared to try something new?? The spread is the new way to go. Either we adapt or we die.
    Pro set is boring.

    • Do you watch any football outside of the PAC12, better yet, do you watch any football at all

      • You are telling me to try a little less posting??? Ha ha ha!! Dude you dont seem to have a life. You post all day. I havent even posted in a couple of weeks after the USC debacle that made us look like chumps the last couple of weeks. Answer: FIRE MONTE KIFFIN NOW!!
Your a fool. Alabama and its pro set style of play is outdated and boring. so is ours. But even Alabama includes aspects of the spread, that is the only thing that has kept them successful. Go learn a thing or two about football before you bother to respond.

        Adapt or die!

        • Outdated and boring wins titles….LOL

When it comes to Alabama and SEC football, you have no idea what you’re talking about….you’re saying two different things about the same team….Defense is what makes Alabama successful. Please practice what you preach.

          PS….why can’t Oregon beat a SEC team?

          • You dont know sh!✝ about football. Spread offenses dont work in the NFL because the DBs and safeties are as fast as the WRs. But the spread works in college football. thats why so many programs are switching over. you are an idiot.

SHIT DUDE!, I fell out of my chair and almost hurt myself, when I read that. Do you even watch football? Your football IQ is little to none….you need to stay on the porch

          • dude go read about spread O’s in the nfl and you’ll see i’m right. wanna be trojan douchebag!!

          • Hey penis breath, I’m not going to get in a pissing contest with you, but you’re confusing a true spread offense with a read option offense….Like I said, sit on the porch and get your thoughts straight

  13. the redskins , panthers , 49ers, use piecies of the spread. I would love to use a hybrid of pro and spread up tempo offense like say syracuse which has little talent but tweaked there offense in 2012 and now there top 20 offense.
