USC linebacker Tony Burnett apologized for several tweets he sent out expressing his disappointment going to El Paso for the Sun Bowl, including “I’ve been to El Paso no one wants to be there New Year’s Eve.”
Another said, “I won’t apologize this is fact. Been there done that.”
USC is promoting the twitter monikers of football players this season but this is not the type of publicity it hoped to generate. Burnett’s apology and initial comments here.
The shameful saga continues for USC football…this is what we get when we’ve got a coach that really shouldn’t be there. And I’ll guarantee you that next season will never be better, either, if he stays. Have you ever seen a football program that turns around a season after once it spirals down like USC did this season with the same coach and staff? I sure haven’t.
Well, lets see John McKay went 10-0-1 in 1969 then went 6-4-1 (6th place in conference) in 1970, 6-4-1 in 1971, (people were calling for his head) then 12-0 in 1972. So it HAS been done before. If Kiff hires a real DC and a real OC this team is STILL loaded and Wittek CAN deliver the ball. Those ARE big “ifs” though.

John McKay had already proven himself with national championships in 1962 and 1967. Please don’t tell me you are seriously comparing a coach that was fired from the Raiders after one losing season for being a liar to the late, great John McKay?
McKay was about to be fired in 1962 ‘cept he won a NC the same was rumored beginning of 1967 but a certain RB from SFCC arrived.
Problem is McKay was a quick learner a shrewd strategist and the players worshiped him – Sadly, Kiffin has none of the three save his graduate rate is way way up to his credit.
Time for a Bruin to stand up for a Trojan: LK is not now, nor ever will be–even REMOTELY–in the same class as John McKay.

Actually, it’s quite awesome. Great university, wonderful campus, excellent football team, and a great bowl game in lovely San Diego against a high-flying Baylor team. Oh, and plus that part about the Victory Bell. Ding! Ding!

Burnett is only saying what everybody else is thinking and saying. This is one of the worst of several bad bowl games coming in the next month. Here’s a Yahoo sports quote(Are You Ready for Some Bowls), “a Sun Bowl featuring a team with a losing record (Georgia Tech) and perhaps the most underachieving squad in all the land (USC)…This (the bowl season) is nothing more than a bunch of meaningless contests between mediocre teams…Maybe if the fans stop watching, there will be a true playoff. Maybe if the fans stop buying tickets, all these meaningless games will wither up and die. There’s no better time to start than now.

Burnett should be left home as a cannon shot across the bow for the rest of the players – this was a stupid statement in the era of ’24/7′ internet transmissions. If a player from another team had said that all of you would be all over him for such a remark. Poor sportsmanship anyway you look at it.
