What Might Have Been?

The news that Syracuse coach Doug Marrone left for the NFL reminded me the Orangemen originally offered the job to Lane Kiffin in 2009. Kiffin turned Syracuse down because wanted a bigger job. And he was right. Twice, when he got the Tennessee and USC jobs.

But if Kiffin had gone to Syracuse, would former athletic director Mike Garrett have hired him at USC in 2010? Maybe. Maybe not.

  1. As Pedro Mora said on 710 AM before the Sun Bowl re. Kiffin “He has an amazing ability to fail upward.”

  2. Of course he would have hired Goat Boy. Garrett was dumber than a sack of hammers!
    Fit on torgan!

  3. Wolfbag, just because you can say something doesn’t mean you should. What the hell does this have to do with anything? You smell like farts and your blog is fishy vagina. The Nard dog has spoken.

    • dude, the nard dog is speaking too much. You’re killing the nard dog by spouting anything more than farts.

      • I see i have struck a nerve with you, little fart nugget. I am in your head now. You have been owned. Now go smell Wolfbags vagina fart. The Nard dog has spoken.

  4. And he interviewed for another gig WHILE head coach at the Raiders. Who did he interview with again? Miami? I forget who it was and it ticked Al Davis off.

    • The University of Arkansas. He didn’t really interview with them but rather sent an inquiry to them that he wanted the job. Houston Nutt had resigned during Arkansas’ tumultuous season. At the same time, Bobby Petrino’s 1st season with the Falcons was a complete disaster and he wanted out of there. So Petrino reached out to Arkansas as well. Al Davis thought Petrino accepted the job and quit before the Falcons’ season was over because he was worried that had he waited until the offseason, Lane would’ve been the favorite for that job.

      • Ok. Thanks for the clarification.

Ironically, Kiffin wanted Brady Quinn instead of Jamarcus Russell. Russell’s first action as a Raider was actually pretty decent as Kiffin brought him along safely. If memory serves me right, Russell’s first play was a play action to the strong left with a sideline pass to Jerry Porter on the right. High percentage play and he was probably instructed to simply throw it away if he didn’t get the correct coverage.

Now, will he bring along Wittek the correct way? Or will he feed them to the wolves like he did in the Notre Dame game and Sun Bowl?

        I suspect the latter.

        • Yeah, I don’t follow the Raiders too closely as I am a die hard Niners fan. But if you watch Al Davis’ press conference where he announces Kiffin’s firing, you’ll see that a lot of the problems Davis had with him still ring true today–odd clock management, curious and predictable playcalling, mishandling of coaches, etc. I am still awaiting a 76-yard field goal attempt like he had done with Janikowski. But one of them that Kiffin was right about was Jamarcus Russell and his inability to win with him. Davis claims Kiffin couldn’t make up his mind on who to draft–Russell, Megatron, Quinn, etc.

I agree with you on Max Wittek. Frankly, I, and I think many here as well, think that he’ll make Max Browne the starter next year even if Kessler and/or Wittek outperform him.

  5. Don’t get all hot & bothered about totally blaming MG about this. MG tried to hire other coaches and got turned down. Mainly due to the probability of sanctions and nobody likes to follow a legend.
