Morning Buzz

With the news Chip Kelly stays at Oregon, the conventional wisdom is that this is bad for the rest of the Pac-12. But Lane Kiffin (and Steve Sarkisian) are probably happy because they revere Kelly.

Let’s remember Kiffin followed Kelly in so many ways (morning practices, crazy shoes, no injury reports) that you would think he coached for years under Kelly instead of Pete Carroll.

  1. Now that Oregon is going to continue as a force to contend with, let me ask two questions….

#1-If he, or for that matter, Brian Kelly, Nick Saban, Bob Stoops, even Urban Meyer, had this team Lane Kiffin had this season, would they be closer to playing tonight at the Orange Bowl for the National Championship?
#2-Would any of these coaches figure out after one season that Monte Kiffin was unable to defend the spread offense and do something (anything) about it before the 2nd season started?

    • Kelly went to the press box to congratulate him after Monte beat the ducks last year.

        • Of course Maldanado choked as he did again against Stanford this year.

They go for 4th down like 90% of the time inside the opponent’s 40 then only ask him to kick game tying/winning field goals?

        • Tyler’s fumble down inside the 5 yard line made the game closer than it should of been

    • #1 all 5 of them would be undefeated with these guys

#2 MK did alright last season but clearly lost his touch this year

    • I am not an LK fan, but do you honestly think the teams/coaches you listed above didn’t have the over-all talent that USC had in 2012? Do you think playing with 65-68 scholarship players, week after week, does not affect your teams performance. Don’t let the “recruiting” stars get in your eyes. Don’t worry though, they only have to face Brian Kelly on their regular season schedules for 2013-14. The answer to #1: Yes #2: Yes

      • OK Tom, you made good points here. I just think any of these other coaches would have still taken the risk of more live tackling during practices, whether or not they had a full roster. 3-star or 5-star players, you still have to train them & prepare them for what they will face on the field. It is obvious these players didn’t get that benefit due to Kiffin family inexperience & inability, who I believe, got paid in upper salary of college coaching.

        • I agree with your coaching comparisons: Kiffen or the five. I’m a giving person…I’d give your right nut to have Kelly ND, Saban, Stoops, Meyer, or Kelly O coaching USC.

    • Not so fast my friend, sanctions are just around the corner, Chip was cheating and got caught, Lyles threw him under the bus…HAHA!!!!

    • Baby blue sweater with white stains all over the front(thanks to bruinrob) and an assortment of spoiled jockstraps hanging out the back pocket!!!!!,

      (i just like saying it)

      you keep oooooooooooon scooopin’ wolfman!!!

  2. If Kiffin wants to copy Chip so much why doesnt he copy his spread offense? That dying ancient pro style offense from Jon Gruden in 1999 ain’t workin.

    • Because USC’s main recruiting advantage is making PRO football players — not guys who will score points in a gimmick offense.

      • Ah yes. Making pro players who flop in the Pros. What does USC’s pro style offense prepare players for exactly? Even the NFL has moved on. The USC traditionalists need to get over it. Football has changed.

        • Really? Mathews, Malaluga, Perry, Khalil, etc..

more 1st-4th rounders this year (McDonald, Barkley, Woods, Robey, etc) means the NFL has “moved on”??

Name the NFL starters from Oregon’s gimmick offense, please.

          • I care about college football, not the NFL. I’d rather have championships over draft picks. Both would be nice, but championships mean more.

          • Agreed…yet how many championships has Kelly won?

btw – Jon Gruden didn’t run a conventional “pro” offense.. No pro team really does. Gruden was more WCO as he came from Holmgren’s staff.

          • Well, at least some recent PAC 12 championships until this year. Can’t really gauge it on NCAA titles, because that’s so hard. Carroll only had 2 (yes I count AP in an imperfect system) with a dynasty.

          • Yes, national titles are tough especially with east coast bias.
Sorry — got sidetracked. I believe your original point was for Kiffin to get creative, right?
I don’t think him “being creative” is the problem with his offense. Many think he “overthinks” his gameplans and forgets about the basics: blocking and tackling. Only until he gets that solved and getting his best players on the field can they succeed.
Whether he wants to run the spread, the wishbone, or the i-formation, he needs execution and the guys up front to win their battles. Even Chip Kelly is very Lombardi-like when it comes to his offense’s inside/outside zone reads.

          • Who are these big stars who’ve come out since Kelly started kicking SC’s @ss with his “gimmick” offense? Bet you’ll find as many Ducks as Trogans succeeding there. And let’s be real, guys like Woods make it to the NFL despite Lane’s coaching, not because of it. And do you really want to put Barfly in the list of “top” guys? I mean, do you?

          • Name the Ducks that are starters in the NFL since Kelly started “kicking SC’s ass”. I think even UCLA has more.
LaMichael James was THIRD on SF’s depth chart and he was a heisman candidate! Where’s Daron Thomas? His numbers were incredible..
Watch the draft this year and count ’em. Tell me aren’t be Oregon players are being overlooked. NFL scouts will continue to credit scheme over there. I’m not saying their players aren’t any good — they just aren’t getting the same type of evaluations SC players are.

          • They aren’t being overlooked at all. Difference between Oregon and SC is that Kelly wins with players who fit what he does. SC loses with a roster of guys who’d go league no matter where they went. Want to prove your point tho, find me average guys who turned into NFL guys under Lane. Go ahead, I dare you.

          • Dude, you’re all over the place. You disagreed that USC is an NFL football factory. We see who that went above.

Now this is who’s the better coach between Kiffin and Kelly? Me disagreeing with Kelly being the better coach would be as stupid as you saying USC doesn’t produce NFL talent.

          • SC doesn’t “produce” NFL talent is my point. For year under Pete SC recruited NLF talent and just let them do what they do. Now under Lane, they’re actually turning NFL talent into flops. Woods, for example, was NFL material the day he stepped onto campus. He’s actually gotten worse at SC. Barkley? Should have gone early like Sanchez, who got out before they realized he was no good. List goes on. There’s no doubt SC has a lot of guys in the league, but to suggest that they’re there because of something SC actually has done is just off.

        • Well, the 5 star guys who have signed is even funnier. Obviously, our guys want to play in the NFL and USC has ties EVERYWHERE in the NFL.

Even when the team is losing or playing up to Bruin standards, they’re still generating NFL all-pros.

Just the thought of you arguing this is a laughter.

          • How many all-pros in the past few years? Sanchez? Bwahah. The days of SC producing top NFL talent left with Pete, and they were all on roids.

          • Hmmm…lets see…

Off the top of my head, Matthews, Polomalu, Cassell, Kalil..

You really should look up some of these things before asking stuff just to disprove your biased point. With your lack of football knowledge, I bet you don’t even know last ucla player that was named in the pro bowl or who starts today.

          • Sorry, I said since Kelly changed college football. Some of the guys you listed are as old as Kelly. Clown.

          • You asked in “the last couple of pro bowls”. sorry thought couple actually meant last two as in 2011 and 2012…My mistake 😉

I know you hate SC, but you’re making yourself look really bad now. Even changed the question you asked. LOL

          • see below. I’m talking recently, not historically. The idea that SC has “ties” to the NFL is a joke. More 5* flops than just about anywhere. And the guys who made it would have made it coming out of San Jose State just as easily. SC had nothing to do with it.

          • Yes, it’s a joke — just like your perception of things. I get it that you hate SC, but you really should know your stuff when trying to pick a fight. Otherwise, you might as well just say “yo mama”.

So, the NFL doesn’t have SC guys in the NFL? Pete Carrol? When Al Davis was around, he was the biggest SC homer around. Hue Jackson? I could go on…

you don’t think these guys are a bit partial to their USC heritage and pick up guys like Mike Williams or even Vince Evans just because of their familiarity with them?

Better question: if you were a 5 star recruit coming out of high school what Pac-12 school would give you the best shot at the NFL? Assuming whatever position you play isn’t stacked at your preferred school of course.

          • 1. Go on YouTube
            2. Search “USC NFL Factory”
            3. Watch
            4. Cry
            5. Watch the NFL draft and hope Kevin Prince, A. Hester, and Sheldon Price get picked up as undrafted free agents.

        • Please come out of the closet, it’s obvious

Are you guys ever going to win a conference title?

Go troll a Baylor site, I’m sure you got plenty of excuses for the blow out

We keep laughing at your pathetic ass

          • GO LOOK IN THE MIRROR THAT’S DENIAL….WOW!!! 49-29 was a great laugh

            3 and 0….LOL!!!

Go troll your mom’s panties, and while you’re at it give bucket a whiff

      • unfortunately, PRO football is going the way of the quick-strike, running qb, spread em out offenses. How you don’t see that yet is beyond me.

        • And yes…please tell me who uses a spread-type offense that’s in the playoffs right now?

          • Do you even watch Pro football, watch it this weekend and get back to us on which teams run a variation of the spread offense….Make sure you know what to look for

          • Nobody runs a “pure” spread with an option read. The closest to it is Green Bay.

Cincy, SF, Baltimore, and Minesota still run power/gap style offenses and still huddle. Houston runs a West Coast Offense with zone blocking.
If you’re talking about a variant of the spread in the college sense, I guess you can make a case for it, but for the most part, the traditional power/gap with 1-2 TE and even a fullback are still king.

  3. Kiffin may be happy cause he won’t play Oregon next season unless they both make the Conf. Champ. game, Sark can’t be happy cause it’s a guaranteed loss for Wash. As far as Kiff following Kelly, I believe SC is doing away with AM practices, most every team is getting wild with uniforms and not being specific with injury reports. Really Wolf this National Inquirer reporting.

  4. Doesn’t this mean Chip will likely have to testify in the face of the upcoming sanctions?

On the surface, it appears Oregon’s violation is more serious the Reggie Bush thing yet we hear nothing but crickets. If this were SC that gave a bunch of money to the so-called “scouting” company and got caught, imagine the outrage?

    • Kelly may bail (like Carroll did) after the sanctions come down and he can get a better gig than Cleveland. Oregon, like Ohio St, have ADs that know how to play the game, unlike the arrogant Mike Garret.
