Why Would Robey Go Pro?

I think you can make a strong case for Robert Woods or Nickell Robey to go pro. Robey will not get any taller next season, so would he really improve his stock?

But USC’s had other players who delayed going pro that were ready. What might be different this year was the atmosphere at the end of the season. Robey might have been turned off by the post-game arguing in the locker room at the Sun Bowl and wondering if a new defensive coordinator would bring in yet another secondary coach.

He might have thought Lane Kiffin would not regain the team and feel like going through another season of disillusionment. Woods’ relationship deteriorated so much with Lane Kiffin, turning pro was easy.

Robey’s was harder. But maybe in the end he felt like there was no other choice.

  1. why would any NFL Drafte-eligible player want to return for more humiliation? USC was lucky to win games this year, next year you’re looking 5-7 at best, even if Oregon is not on your schedule.

    • True lost locker room, same thing for slick rick, kiffin will really be a lame duck coach next year.

  2. So he didn’t have to answer stupid questions from the Wolfbag, that’s why. Now smell my farts. The Nard dog has spoken.

  3. Kiffin’s fault! The kid really got bad advice.. blowing the degree a
year early. Why as a projected 4th rd pick would a kid lose his senior
year and especially that USC degree. Very bad move, Kiffin needs to go!
He’s as much the cause as the kids need for finances at this time.

    • So you wouldn’t leave if you were him? Juniors leave all the time and many come back to complete their degrees.

Good luck to Woods and Robey in the draft.

      • Did not say that I’d not leave, just that it was bad advice. Most never return to complete those degrees, but I hope that he does. Had he opted to fulfull his committment and have his senior year, he would have gained many experiences that he’ll never have.
Being a 4th or worse draft pick is definitely not worth leaving school early for.
I wish him (of course R Woods too) all he best. They were both great Trojans, but Roby’s decision was foolish imho.

        • Tim McDonald finally got his degree a few years ago and TJ and Tevin were in attendance. =)

I don’t think Robey will go as low as the 4th round, but you never know. We’ll see how he does at the combine and/or pro day.

In my opinion, his stock has very little chance go up from one more year at USC. The Pac-12 is all of a sudden NOT the “QB conference” it was just a few years ago. He would see very few passes thrown on his side of the field.

  4. This is hilarious. Its scary to think that you actually cover USC football for a living. Only takes a 10 minute conversation to know Nickell’s story. His mom passed shortly after national signing day. He has younger siblings. Everybody knows that nobody on the roster is as close to the Kiffins as Robey. Guaranteed that Monte and Dallas will draft him in the 2nd or 3rd round.

    • No it doesn’t have anything to do with ee. It opens up one scholarship total but not an ee.

    • Idiots at SC still don’t understand the sanctions they’re under. No wonder Wolfie needs to dumb things down so much.

  5. HAH! once AGAIN wolf delivers a humiliating kick in the crotch to trOXan fans!!

remind me never to cross you, wolfman!!

since i have no empirical evidence that suggest this kid is an imbecile, i fully expect him to RUN not walk away from this train wreck!!!

    keep ’em coming, wolfman!!!

  6. Robey wants to get paid..it’s as simple as that. Good for him. We have 2 great corner recruits coming in…Ramsey and Hawkins. They’ll get a chance to start from day one. This will help with our future if anything. It’s not a given that usc can get the best cover corner in high school…that’s who jalen is. We can build around him for the next 4 years. Next year isn’t going to be a championship caliber team anyways. Lets give the young guys their playing time and hope it pays off in 2014 or when the sanctions wear off.

  7. You don’t want to risk losing what talent you have showcased so far, by staying in an environment like USC’s underachieving team play. So you abandon ship while you have your name still on some NFL lips. Robey could also be fed up with Kiffin lolly-gagging in naming a new DC as most of us USC fans are in addition he feels he isn’t going to learn any more with this coaching staff to warrant another year. He probably thinks Barkley made a bad decision staying. We all know Barkley hurt himself staying his senior year with Kiffin as coach. I just can’t believe the administration is comfortable with how this program is being managed… it makes no sense. You look at Penn State & Ohio St. and see how their programs are united and focused. And then you look at this circus Kiffin is the ring master of and you wonder what the hell is the administration is thinking?

    • Barkley’s situation was much different. If he left last year, he was looking at a draft LOADED at QB with RGiii and Luck. Even with Barkley’s stock dropping, the QB position isn’t as stacked this year and he would’ve clearly been #1 if he repeated 2011. Of course, we know how that went.

WIth Robey, it doesn’t have much to do with the coaching staff as SW always likes to fantasize. According to Scott, the players sit around and complain about Kiffin all day and get in alleged fights in the locker room.

Robey staying doesn’t make any sense. The Pac-12 is no longer the “QB conference” that it was and the run/pass ratio has changed into a run-heavy conference (even from the spread formations). With that said, he won’t get his share of balls thrown his way and he won’t get a year better than 2011 in terms of passes defensed and interceptions.

In other words, there’s no scenario where he stays then gets elevated into a first rounder.

  8. LOL at this discussion. Truth is, Lee was even considering leaving – thinking it’d be better to sit out a year than play with Lane again next year. Now that’s desperation! LOSE ON!
