With Clancy Pendergast expected to become the next defensive coordinator, it is worth noting Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is apparently on his way out.
Marinelli is a former USC assistant and his daughter is married to former USC linebackers coach Joe Barry. He also worked for Monte Kiffin in Tampa Bay so he might be willing to work for Jr.
But it’s just a thought because Pendergast could be officially hired as soon as today.
Give me Pendergast. This guy can be really good with the talent pool at usc…lets just give him a chance guys, before we ramble on about how this isn’t a big hire. This guys defense made it to the Super Bowl.. Anyone with nfl experience should be welcomed.. And thats exactly what this usc fan is going to do, welcome him.

Marinelli would be a terrible college DC. Succeeded in Chacigo because Lovie Smith was the real DC, and because he had Pro Bowlers like Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings at CB and Hall of Famers like Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs and Julius Peppers. He is a good DL coach and did get Henry Meltion to be a Pro Bowl player. But he isn’t a significant upgrade over Orgeron and he can’t recruit.
But Chicago struggled against mobile QB’s. Almost lost to Cam Newton at a time when everyone starting on the Carolina OL began the season on the bench or on the practice squad. Was blown out by Colin Kaepernick and lost in OT to Russell Wilson. Gave up 300 years passing to Andrew Luck in his first NFL start, Even Aaron Rogers’s limited mobility gave the Bears fiits.
Scooter, if you are going down this road, why not just hire Lovie Smith then have him replace Kiffin next year.
Word is it’s now a done deal, welcome aboard! Pendergast likes to run a 3-4 defense and apply pressure using creative and balanced schemes from all angles of the defense while also still using elements of the 4-3 at times.
There could be some personnel changes involved in such a switch. Current USC commits Jason Hatcher and Torrodney Prevot could move to the new outside linebacker spot, and Dion Bailey could see a move back to his original safety spot.
